Referencing "The End of Time Part Two" and "The Caves of Androzani": someone/something has changed history: the Fifth Doctor hasn't escaped the gunrunners (they torture him to death) and thus doesn't save Peri. The Tenth Doctor, realizing that his own incarnation is endangered and also aware that in his own time he is dying anyway, breaks the rules by going back in his own timeline to restore his original history. It is the Tenth Doctor who narrates this tale. Whump! Although correcting the changed history does not alter the fact that both the Tenth and Fifth Doctors die on the day(s) this story takes place, as they did in the original history, neither death is portrayed here. The Fifth Doctor's potential (different) death, in the new history, is referred to but not portrayed directly.

The Fifth Doctor, not sure what is impelling him to do so, nonetheless sends Nyssa and Tegan away (for a week, chaperoned, to Paris, for shopping and museums) so he can, in the safety of the TARDIS garden, with the help of his beloved Venusian Magnolia tree, sink willingly into a trance and record his exploration of his origins. The result is so traumatic he is doubtful he can survive the experience long enough to find whatever he seeks.

And why, after all, do people enjoy being scared? Events unfold in a fun fair with a scary haunted house (and an after-hours extreme haunt) that could cost the Doctor his TARDIS and his life. Lotsa whump, sexual tension (no actual sex), delayed comfort. Prequel to "Zeengrave on Five Pounds a Day." (Not exactly a prequel to "Perils" but definitely occurs some time prior to it.)
