Confused Gallifreyan

Adapted from Chris Chibnall

1. EXT. HILLTOP IN PEAK DISTRICT - SUNSET

Wide shot over a lush, green hilltop. a group of three are here. one, a young man in his late teens, is sat on a bike. another, a middle-aged man, is holding the bike at the side, keeping it upright. the final person, a middle-aged woman, is stood by them.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Who says you can't?

Close-up of GRACE. A middle-aged, Black woman. She has a grin on her face, a face filled with warmth and love. Love for the two men she is with. She is looking at RYAN, her grandson. A 19-year-old man, black, from Sheffield, who is sitting, uneasy on the bike.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Me! Nan, we have been up here for hours! Same as last weekend, same as the weekends before!

Cut to GRAHAM, middle-aged man, white, married to GRACE and RYAN'S step grandfather.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
And every week you manage to get closer and closer.

RYAN SINCLAIR
No! I don't! I just keep falling and falling!

GRACE O’BRIEN
Ryan! Do not speak to your grandad like that!

RYAN SINCLAIR
You mean Graham.

GRACE and GRAHAM share a quick look. This is a common response of RYAN SINCLAIR.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Do not speak to Graham like that then!
(pause)
Look, we have a train to catch soon. Let's try it a few more times.

RYAN SINCLAIR
(Sighs loudly)
Fine, for you. But it won't be my fault if I fall off a cliff.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Atta boy, now just keep your eyes ahead and your -

RYAN SINCLAIR
Hands on the bars. Yes, I know, Graham.

RYAN pushes his feet into positions. GRAHAM starts to push him slowly. As RYAN picks up speed GRAHAM gently lets go of the bike.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
C'mon son! You can do it!

RYAN peddles frantically for a few feet, his hand struggling to keep the handlebars of the bike straight.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
There you go, mate! You are doing it! You are doing it!

GRACE looks proudly at her grandson.

RYAN suddenly loses control of the bike; he falls off it and lands painfully in the grass beside it.

WIDESHOT: Graham and Grace run to check on Ryan.

Ryan's POV on the ground and Grace and Graham come into view.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Nearly

RYAN SINCLAIR
No! Not nearly
(Grace goes to help him up but he shakes her away)
I'm sick of coming here! I'm sick of falling! I'm sick of this stupid bike!

Ryan pushes himself up, and starts to run toward the bike

GRACE O’BRIEN
(Realising)
Ryan Sinclair! Don't you dare--

Too late! Ryan has grabbed the bike and made it to the edge of the cliff. He throws it hard over the edge and slumps down on the floor. Covering his face with his hands.

Grace and Graham move over to Ryan. Grace bends down and puts her arms around him, while Graham stands, keeping his distance.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Mate, you were riding for a moment

RYAN SINCLAIR
(Sharp)
Stop calling me mate!
(Quieter)
Anyway, a second's not long enough.

GRACE O’BRIEN
(Stroking Ryan's back)
You'll manage it, one day. All you have to do is keep trying.

RYAN SINCLAIR
(Fully lifts his head up, tears in his eyes)
I just want to make you proud.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Oh Ryan! You make me proud every day!

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Of course, you do, ma-
(slight pause)
Ryan. Of course, you do. However, I feel I speak for both of us when I say, you are on your own getting your bike back. We have a train to catch.
(To Grace)
Twenty minutes, we best get a move on love.

2. EXT. SMALL WOODED CLEARING - MOMENTS LATER

WIDESHOT: Ryan finishes climbing down from the hilltop. Grunting with the effort. He starts to wander around the clearing, looking for his bike.

CLOSEUP: The bike is stuck in a tree, Ryan notices it and sighs deeply.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Fan-tas-tic.

Ryan starts to pull on the branches, maybe he can shake it down, so he won't have to climb the tree.

FOCUS: As Ryan pulls on the branches, a small, glowing, purple outline starts to form in the air. It slowly expands until a solid, metal square has formed.

Ryan pauses, the change in energy and lighting of the clearing has caught his attention.
He turns around and looks at the portal, stumbling back due to the shock.

After a few moments, he manages to compose himself. He moves towards the portal.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Wow!

Ryan reaches a hand towards the portal. Suddenly, a small, purple orb, glowing softly with a strange energy emerges from it. It pauses for a moment before moving high into the sky, away from Ryan and the clearing.

Ryan reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone, dials a number.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Hello
(pause)
Police. I think...

CUT TO:

3. EXT. SHEFFIELD STREET - SUNSET

A typical Sheffield Hillside street. Cars parked closely on both sides of the road. A police officer is walking ahead of the camera.

YASMIN KHAN - SHEFFIELD BORN, 19 YEARS OLD, AMBITIOUS AND DETERMINED, BUT ALSO LIGHTHEARTED, FUN AND A FULL OF ENERGY.

Shot follows YASMIN KHAN as she walks towards two women (SONIA and JANEY) arguing in the street.

YASMIN Pauses next to a car - a hammer sticking out of the smashed windshield.

SONIA
See! She smashed it with a hammer!

JANEY
Because you keyed my driver side door!

PAN TO: Nearby car with large, deep scratch on the driver side door.

The two women stand by their cars, staring hard at each other. Both women are of middle eastern decent.

SONIA
Because you parked in MY spot!

JANEY
It is not your spot! We don't do "spots" on this --

YASMIN KHAN
(interrupting)
Ladies! Please!
(Both women continue to argue)
(More loudly)
Ladies!
(Women stop and stare at Yasmin)
Thank you! Can I suggest a simple solution?
(To Janey)
I suggest you pay for the damaged windshield.
(To Sonia)
And I suggest you pay for the door repairs.
(Over both women who start to argue)
And we all agree that parking around here is a nightmare, but we are more than capable of handling it like adults and not by brandishing hammers and keys around.
(SONIA and JANEY start to argue again)
And if we are all in agreement, there is no need for any further police action, and we can all get on with our lives?
(YASMIN looks at both women)
Can't we?

YASMIN smiles at both women and moves past them.

As Yasmin walks away, the two women look at each other, something approaching shame in their eyes, but it is quickly forgotten as both move back to their homes.

CUT TO:

4. INT. SHEFFIELD POLICE STATION CORRIDOR

YASMIN KHAN is in the middle of arguing with her Probation Supervisor, SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER.

YASMIN KHAN
(frustrated)
Sir! I am just saying, I am capable of more than parking disputes.
SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER
(Walking down the corridor with YASMIN rushing to keep up)
And I am telling you, don't run before you can walk. You are still on probation, Yaz. Learn the basics. Get to know the public.

YASMIN KHAN
I think I already know enough about the public.

SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER
(small smile)
And it gives you chance to work on your people skills.

YASMIN KHAN
I just want to make a different! Do more! Help the community. Can you not give me something a bit different? Something to test me.

SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER
(heavy sigh)
Something has just come in. Go and check it out. Maybe it will be something a bit different.

CUT TO:

5. EXT. SMALL WOODED CLEARING - EVENING

Ryan and Yasmin stand before the portal. A soft, purple glow now fills the clearing. The portal seems to be struggling to stay powered. It keeps fading and brightening.

YASMIN KHAN
And you say you just found it here?

RYAN SINCLAIR
No
(pause)
I said it appeared. Out of nowhere.

YASMIN KHAN
(Gives Ryan a sideways glance)
Right.

RYAN SINCLAIR
I swear! This isn't a prank. How would I even be able to get this thing here?
RYAN SINCLAIR (CONT'D)
(Stops he realises he is making it worse)
Look. I'll start at the beginning. I came down here to get my bike -

YASMIN KHAN
(notebook in hand)
Your bike?
(glances around)
Where is your bike?

RYAN SINCLAIR
(looking up)
Up there. In that tree.

YASMIN KHAN
(sighs, opens her notebook)
Name, sir.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Ryan Sinclair.

YASMIN KHAN
(Stops. Looks up)
Ryan Sinclair? Wait. Redlands Primary?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Yeah? Why?

YASMIN KHAN
Yasmin Khan!

RYAN SINCLAIR
Oh my god! Yaz?! Wow!

YASMIN KHAN
I know!

RYAN SINCLAIR
Look at you! You're a fed?

YASMIN KHAN
Yeah! I mean, we don't call it that. And I am still training, probationary. Second year. What about you? What you been up too?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Warehouse Worker.

YASMIN KHAN
(Slight pause)
How do you find it?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Hate it but it's cash while I study for my NVQ. I want to be a mechanic.

YASMIN KHAN
That's good.
(pause - It has become awkward.)
You have to move this though.
(nodding at the metal frame of the portal)
It will be dark soon, can't have people tripping over it.
(Looking at the purple glow around it)
Or thinking there is some sort or rave happening. We get enough pointless calls as it is.

RYAN SINCLAIR
I can't move it. I can't even lift it.

YASMIN KHAN
Right, well I you will have a phone for a tow or something.

RYAN SINCLAIR
(frustrated)
But it isn't even -

Suddenly Yasmin's phone rings. She answers it.

YASMIN KHAN
PC Khan.
(Pause)
A train? Where?

Ryan, looking at the frame of the portal suddenly looks up at the mention of a train.

YASMIN KHAN
Reports of strange purple lights?
(Looks at the purple glow)
Right, I am on my way.

RYAN SINCLAIR
What was that about a train?
(worried)
My nan and her husband are on a train back into town.

YASMIN KHAN
(Sighs)
C'mon, I'll take you. See if your nan is ok. But don't tell anybody, and then you have to come back to move this.
(Nods towards the metal frame)
Deal?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Deal!

Ryan and Yasmin walk away, heading towards Yasmin's police car. Suddenly, the portal like flickers a final time and goes out completely, leaving the clearing in total darkness.

CUT TO:

6. INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - A FEW MOMENTS AGO.

GRACE and GRAHAM are sat together as the train rolls along. The sun has continued to set, bathing the carriage in darkness. Across from GRAHAM and GRACE sits KARL, mid-to-late twenties, tall and skinny, with headphones on.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Do you think he will ever call me grandad?

GRACE O’BRIEN
Give him time.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
We’ve been married three years.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Happiest three years of my life.

Grace leans into Graham and kisses him. They look each other in the eyes. True love.

GRACE O’BRIEN
(Towards KARL)
He can't keep his hands off me!

KARL looks away from them, turning up his headphones.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Behave yourself!

GRACE O’BRIEN
Never!

Suddenly the train slams to a halt, throwing Grace and Graham on top of each other.
Karl’s stays in his sit, looking anxiously at the pair as they pick themselves up.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
What was that?
(helping Grace up)

All the doors of the train open, the sound of the pressure hissing out is the only sound that can be heard.

GRACE O’BRIEN
C'mon, let's have a look at what's happening!
(starts heading towards the open door)

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Grace! Wait!
(follows behind her)

GRACE O’BRIEN
(excited)
I'm just looking!

CUT TO:

7. EXT. TRAIN TRACKS - NIGHT

Darkness surrounds the train. The faint lights within the carriages are the only source of light.

GRACE sticks her head out of the carriage door. She looks down, no platform, just the tracks. A big jump down. Grace stays where she is.

The other passengers can be seen jumping down from the train, some people are seen on phones, others are seen walking along the tracks. Nobody wants to be near the train. The lights on the train seems to me going out, bulb by bulb.

GRACE O’BRIEN
(shouting at other passengers)
Hey! Stay off the tracks, they might be live!

One of the passengers turns to GRACE, the fear on her face is undeniable. Suddenly, Grace is pulled back into the carriage.

8. INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - NIGHT

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
(pulling Grace)
Get back love! The doors are closing.
As soon as he finishes speaking, the carriage door snaps shut. Locked. No way out now.

KARL
(Terrified)
What is that?!

Outside the window, a purple, glowing orb is floating in the night sky.

The orb rushes towards a nearby electricity pylon. It starts to absorb the power from the pylon, causing sparks to fly around it.

Once the power is absorbed, the orb rushes towards the train.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Quickly, everybody to the back of the train.

The orb of energy effortlessly pushes it's way into the train.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Now!

Grace, Karl and Graham all run to the back of the carriage. They huddle together.

The orb starts to move slowly towards the group.

GRACE O’BRIEN
What is it?

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
I have no idea.
(pulling his phone out of his pocket)

The orb continues to move slowly towards the group. As it moves, it absorbs the power of everything around it. The lights start to go out, the music from Karl's discharged headphones stops.

Suddenly the power is drained from Graham's phone. It sits dead in his hand.

The orb is now about halfway up the carriage, continuing to get closer and closer.

SMASH! A figure falls through the roof of the train, causing the orb to stop dead.

The mysterious figure lies on the floor, regeneration energy swirling around her.

Suddenly the stranger jumps to her feet.
THE NEW DOCTOR.

Facing the group, she brushes off the debris from her torn outfit. The outfit of the Twelfth Doctor. The clothes are too big for her. Do not suit her, even if they weren't torn and dirty.

Seeing the group staring behind her, she turns back around to face the glowing purple orb, paused just in front of her.

Suddenly a wave of regeneration energy explodes out of her, shattering the windows of the train.

The energy is absorbed by the orb, which grows in size. The orb continues to float in front of The Doctor as the regeneration energy stops.

Satisfied the orb float back out of the train and into the night.

THE DOCTOR
(turning back towards the huddled people)
Well, that was lucky, wasn't it?

The Doctor looks around the carriage, noticing the hole in the roof from which her "entered"

THE DOCTOR
Yeah, long story. Bit boring.
(pause and look towards the window the orb left)
This is much more interesting. Doors?

GRACE O’BRIEN
Locked tight.

THE DOCTOR
Shouldn't be a problem.

The Doctor reaches into her pockets. Her new hand pushes right through the pocket and out of the other side.

Empty Pockets. No Sonic. No Tools.

THE DOCTOR
Oh. Empty Pockets.
(tapping her remaining pockets)
No sonic. No nothing. I REALLY hate empty pockets.

KARL
There's another one!

A different purple orb rushes into the train. The Doctor's entrance seems to have attracted them. More swirl outside. The Doctor watches them carefully while taking large stride towards the orb in the train.

THE DOCTOR
Right then. What might you be?

A crackle of electricity shoots from the orb.

THE DOCTOR
(offended)
Alright. Don't like questions. More the private type. I get that-

Another burst of electricity surges from the orb.

THE DOCTOR
(commanding)
All of you, get back!
(quieter)
Now, stay very, very still.

KARL
(frozen with fear)
It's going to kill us.

THE DOCTOR
It could have already done that.
(To the creature)
But you didn't, did you?

Crack of electric.

THE DOCTOR
Sorry, questions again. I can't help it. I like questions, I do.
(Pause of doubt)
At least. I think I do. I definitely, probably, used to.

Another crack of electricity. This one seems to restore some of the power of the train. Causing the doors to open.

Ryan Sinclair and Yasmin Khan are stood in the open door leading out of the train.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Nan!

GRACE O’BRIEN
Ryan! Stay back! Don't come any closer!

The orb seems to realise the regeneration energy has gone (for now) and flies through the train, past Grace, Graham, Karl, Ryan and Yasmin.
The Doctor darts to the smashed windows, just in time to see the rest of the orbs leaving.

THE DOCTOR
All of you. Stay put. I am going to check the rest of the train.
(Towards Ryan and Yasmin)
Fat lot of good you were!

With a commanding stride, The Doctor moves through to the next carriage.

After a moments pause, Yasmin and Ryan start to follow her.

YASMIN KHAN
Hey! Madam!

CUT TO:

9. INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - NIGHT

THE DOCTOR is striding purposefully down the darkened carriage. Looking carefully around, but moving quickly. YASMIN KHAN and RYAN SINCLAIR are walking behind her, hurrying to catch up.

YASMIN KHAN
Madam. I need you to stop. This is a potential crime scene.

THE DOCTOR
(stops suddenly and turns on her heel)
Why do you keep calling me madam?

YASMIN KHAN
(slight confusion)
Because you're a woman.

THE DOCTOR
(her hands shoot to her face, delighted)
Am I? I thought I just had high cheekbones.
(Looks at Yaz)
Never underestimate high cheekbone, can get you out of many uncomfortable situations. Does it suit me?

YASMIN KHAN
(confused)
Your cheekbones?

THE DOCTOR
(snaps back to attention)
When is the next train?

RYAN SINCLAIR
This is the last one.

THE DOCTOR
What are your names?

YASMIN KHAN
PC Kham. Hallamshire Police.

THE DOCTOR
(scoffs)
I said names! Not title.

YASMIN KHAN
(slight pause)
Yasmin Khan. Yaz to my friends.
(Notebook out)
I'll need your name too.

THE DOCTOR
And you'll get it.
(Turn back to start walking again)
Just as soon as I remember it.

RYAN SINCLAIR
You don't know your own name?

THE DOCTOR
Of course I know it! I just can't remember it right now. It's right there. On the tip of my-
(Turns back to them, finger on her tongue)
This?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Tongue?

THE DOCTOR
(Enthusiastic)
Tongue! That's it.
(Looking at Ryan)
Smart boy! Biology. What did you say your name was?

RYAN SINCLAIR
I didn't. It's Ryan. Ryan Sinclair.

THE DOCTOR
Fantastic name, Ryan, Ryan Sinclair.
THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(pause)
Are you a Doctor Ryan?

RYAN SINCLAIR
No. Why?

THE DOCTOR
I get the feeling I am looking for a doctor.
(Trails off)
Power. Let's see if we can get this train going again.

The Doctor has reached the driver's cabin. She pulls on a lever by the door, nothing happens.

THE DOCTOR
No power.

YASMIN KHAN
Do you think those things has something to do with this?

THE DOCTOR
Possible. Would be a hell of a coincidence if not. And I don't believe in coincidences.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Really?

THE DOCTOR
Not anymore. Or yet.

The Doctor slides open the door. The complete loss of power has fried the locks.

Sitting in the driver seat is the body of a woman, SISSY. The body is sunken and gray. Like the life was sucked out of it.

THE DOCTOR
(checking the body)
Poor woman.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Those things again?

THE DOCTOR doesn't immediately reply, she is studying the body carefully.

THE DOCTOR
Complete lifeforce absorbsion. Nothing of who this woman was left.

YASMIN KHAN
The important thing is a woman has died. This is now a major incident. I am in charge here.

THE DOCTOR
What are you going to do?

YASMIN KHAN
Call it in, to my station.

THE DOCTOR
And tell them...?

YASMIN KHAN
The facts?

THE DOCTOR
Which are?

YASMIN KHAN
The train was attacked.

THE DOCTOR
By what?

YASMIN KHAN
(doubt)
We can look at the CCTV.

THE DOCTOR
Gone. Wiped alongside everything else. Besides, you don't need them.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Why not?

THE DOCTOR
Because you saw what happened! With your own...
(Points to eyes, looks at Ryan)

RYAN SINCLAIR
Eyes?

THE DOCTOR
Yes! I’m definitely getting the hang of this! We all saw it, with our own eyes.
(emphasis on eyes)

RYAN SINCLAIR
But what was it though? An alien?

Yasmin Khan scoffs.

THE DOCTOR
What? Do you think he is wrong?

YASMIN KHAN
Well. Come on.

THE DOCTOR
You can't discount anything until we have the facts.

YASMIN KHAN
I can't report aliens to my station.

THE DOCTOR
(head tilt)
You are worried they won't believe you. Worried you be stuck on parking duty for the rest of the year.

YASMIN KHAN
What? How--?

THE DOCTOR
But what do I know? Thirty minutes ago I was a white-haired Scotsman. Listen, Yaz. I need you to hold off reporting this. Wait until we know a little more. Until we know the answer to the bigger questions.

YASMIN KHAN
Which are?

THE DOCTOR
What are they? Where do they come from? What are they going to do next? And most importantly, how do we stop any more from becoming like this poor woman?
(nods towards the body)

Suddenly, The Doctor rushes back down the train.

THE DOCTOR
C'mon Ryan! C'mon Yaz!

CUT TO:

10. INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - NIGHT

The train still sits in darkness. Yaz is interviewing KARL, using a pocket light to help her with her notes.

KARL
It's urrm, Karl Wright, middle name Brian. I live at 52 Northover Street.

YASMIN KHAN
Telephone number?

Karl starts to give his number as the camera cuts to GRAHAM, RYAN, GRACE and THE DOCTOR, stood by the back door of the final carriage.

THE DOCTOR
Right then, troops.
(slight pause)
No, not troops. Gang? Fam? Oh no, not that one.
(she shakes her head)
I'm distracting myself.

GRACE O’BRIEN
You came crashing through that roof.

THE DOCTOR
I was thrown out of my TARDIS.
(Sudden shock, realisation)
Oh! My TARDIS. I've lost my TARDIS! First my pockets, now my TARDIS. It was exploding and then it dematerialized --
(to herself)
Don't panic. Don't panic. Not the end of the world. Well, it could be the end of the world. But one thing at a time --

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Are we supposed to understand anything you are saying?

RYAN SINCLAIR
She thinks that orb thing might be alien.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Don't be daft! No such thing as aliens. Even if there was, not on a train to Sheffield.

THE DOCTOR
Why not? I'm an alien and I'm here.

GRAHAM stares at THE DOCTOR for a moment.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Grace! We are out of here.

GRACE O’BRIEN
No, we are not! She just saved our lives.

THE DOCTOR
(to GRAHAM)
Don't be scared. This is all new to you. It's new to me too. I'm all new to me! New can be scary. But new can also be brilliant! Stick with me, you might find some answers.

KARL
(terrified)
Actually. I don't want answers. I just want to get to work and forget any of this happened. If that's alright with everyone. And even if it isn't. Bye

Karl moves to leave before turning around.

KARL
And I'm with him.
(nodding to GRAHAM)
We don't get aliens in Sheffield.

YASMIN KHAN
Would you like me to...?

KARL
No, thank you. I need the air. I need to be on my own.

With that, KARL jumps down from the train and walks out into the night.

GRACE O’BRIEN
I think he's still in shock. Bless him.

THE DOCTOR
Right, obvious question. Has anybody seen anything unusual tonight?

YAZ looks towards RYAN.

RYAN SINCLAIR
(nervously raises his hand)
Actually, now that you mention it.

CUT TO:

11. INT./EXT. POLICE CAR - NIGHT

YAZ driving, THE DOCTOR in the passenger seat, GRAHAM, GRACE and RYAN are all in the back.

YASMIN KHAN
I'm going to be in so much trouble.

THE DOCTOR
Can we have the siren and lights on?

YASMIN KHAN
No! I shouldn't be doing any of this! When they find out I was on that train.

THE DOCTOR
(turns to the back)
So, you three know each other?

GRACE O’BRIEN
(putting her arm around Ryan)
I'm his nan. Graham is my husband.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Second husband.

THE DOCTOR
(oblivious)
And you and Ryan know each other?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Yes, Yaz and I were at school together.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Not Yasmin Khan!

YASMIN KHAN
Hi, Ryan's nan!

GRACE O’BRIEN
Well, look at you. Haven't you done well for yourself love?

THE DOCTOR
(to RYAN)
And did you say you just saw it stood there?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Yes, I took pictures.
(Hands the Doctor his phone)

THE DOCTOR
Good Lad!
(Looks through the pictures)
Ooo, exciting.
(Doubt)
No. Not exciting. Worrying. Fast as you can, Yaz.

CUT TO:

12. EXT. SMALL WOODED CLEARING - NIGHT

GRAHAM, RYAN, GRACE, YASMIN and THE DOCTOR are stood together in an empty clearing. RYAN'S bike still sits in the tree. However, the clearing is empty. No mysterious portal.

RYAN SINCLAIR
It was right here!

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Are you sure this is the place son?

RYAN SINCLAIR
(pointing up)
I came to get my bike.

THE DOCTOR
Why is it in a tree?

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
We were up top, practicing riding. He threw it over - He gets a bit cross cos he can't ride it.

GRACE O’BRIEN
We were giving him lessons. He's got dyspraxia - a coordination condition, makes bikes and things hard for him.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Anyway! Enough about me! The point is, my bike is here, so where is it? That thing, I saw.

YASMIN KHAN
It was definitely here. I saw it myself.

THE DOCTOR
(on all fours around the area the portal was)
Well, where has it gone?
(shoots up)
Right gang. Let's look for clues!

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
What are we looking for?

THE DOCTOR
Use your imagination!
(picks up a cigarette carton)
You'd be surprised what the smallest thing can tell you.
(sniffs the packet, licks the side)

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Oh, right? What are you learning from that?

THE DOCTOR
(coughs)
Littering is a great crime.

YASMIN KHAN
I've found something!

The group gather around YAZ who has found some tire tracks, deep in the soil.

THE DOCTOR
Aw brilliant. Fantastic work, YAZ.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Still doesn't tell us much.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Why so pessimistic? let Yasmin do her work.

YAZ is on the ground, looking at the tire tracks.

THE DOCTOR
What have you learnt, PC Khan?

YASMIN KHAN
The tracks are deep in the soil. That means the vehicle was heavy.

THE DOCTOR
The tracks seem to be deeper here.

YASMIN KHAN
Hmm. Right, that might mean the vehicle was heavier at the back. Looking at the distance between the tires... A tow-truck?

THE DOCTOR
Brilliant.

RYAN SINCLAIR
I don't get it. How does that help us?

THE DOCTOR
We now have more information that we did a minute ago. That's what we call progress.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
But what can we do with this information?

THE DOCTOR
Use it. We have opened a small crack. Now we stick in our fingers and pull.

CUT TO:

13. INT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

RAUL, EARLY 30S, MECHANIC, is sat in his garage. In front of him, sits the mysterious portal. The portal has a soft glow of purple streaking up the side of it, but it doesn't have enough power to activate. RAHIM, EARLY 20s, MECHANIC, is pacing around the garage.

RAHIM
What is it?

RAUL
(excitement and greed on his face)
This is our fortune.

RAHIM
How do you mean?

RAUL
Do you recognise any of this?

RAHIM
(confusion)
No?

RAUL
Yeah, well neither do I. I've seen my fair share of strange things. This tops them all. Something I have learnt working on engines. Weird means valuable.
(big grin on his face)
Pass the saw.

Wide shot of the pair starting to work disassembling the portal.

Suddenly, the orbs rush in through the window. Rushing into the portal, causing the soft purple glow to get brighter.

RAHIM
What the-?

The two mechanics take a step back. The orbs continue to rush into the device, until it is powered enough to reactivate.

The power surges around them, cause lights to surge and burst.

A MYSTERIOUS FIGURE is thrown through the portal. Landing at the feet of the two mechanics.

RAUL'S POV: THE MYSTERIOUS FIGURE, COVERED HEAD TO TOE IN A STRANGE PADDING, PURPLE ELECTRICITY SWIRLING AROUND IT.

CUT TO:

14. EXT. GRAHAM AND GRACE'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Old-fashioned house on a small street, close to the city Centre. THE DOCTOR, GRAHAM, GRACE and RYAN stand next to YAZ'S POLICE CAR. YAZ stays in the driver's seat.

THE DOCTOR
Two strange things. One City. One Night. I don't like coincidences.

RYAN SINCLAIR
I thought you didn't believe in coincidences.

THE DOCTOR
That was before. This is now. Keep up.

YASMIN KHAN
I'll check back at the station. See if there have been any reports.

YASMIN drives away.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
I'll have a word with my old mates from work. I've always said, if you wanna know what's happening, ask a bus driver.

RYAN SINCLAIR
He always says that.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Cos it's true! I'd still do it now if I could.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Ryan and I will check online for anything unusual.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
(about to leave)
Seriously though. Aliens?

THE DOCTOR
Yep.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Yeah. Maybe I won't mention that bit.

Graham heads off towards the city Centre.

THE DOCTOR
Suddenly I feel really tired.

GRACE O’BRIEN
It was a big fall out had love. I think you might have even been on fire! I really think we should get you checked out at A&E.

THE DOCTOR
No. I don't trust anywhere that's just initials. Although -
(sticks a finger up her nose)
Will one of you catch me?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Are you going to fall over?

THE DOCTOR
(finger still up the nose)
In two minutes and nineteen seconds.
(suddenly)
Wait - forget the two minutes. Nineteen-- Oh this new nose is very - unreliable.
The Doctor faints and Ryan and Grace catch her.

CUT TO:

15. EXT. SHEFFIELD POLICE STATION - NIGHT

YAZ parks her car.

She rushes out of her car and into the station

CUT TO:

16. INT. SHEFFIELD POLICE STATION - NIGHT

YAZ rushes up to SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER. Some officers are walking around the background.

YASMIN KHAN
Sergeant! I need to ask you something!

SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER
(sighs)
Khan. Your shift is over. Stop pestering me for more interesting shouts.

YASMIN KHAN
(breathless)
It's not that sir. I'm just wondering whether there's been anything out of the ordinary tonight.

SERGEANT RAMESH SUNDER
Strange metal thing in the woods not out of the ordinary enough for you? Go outside, join the night shift. Everything's out of the ordinary!

He walks out of the station. YAZ is left alone.

CUT TO:

17. EXT. SHEFFIELD TOWN CENTRE - NIGHT

GRAHAM is stood with three other BUS DRIVERS. They are stood just outside of a bus terminal. The drivers are taking a break, buses parked up, doors open.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
I gotta ask, you hear any talk tonight about weird stuff? Strange creatures, or lights?

DRIVER #1
My wife's out with her mates at karaoke if that's what you mean!

The three drivers laugh, GRAHAM smiles, but it isn't what he wants to hear.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Yeah, that must be it!
(Hands some paper to another driver)
But seriously. Let me know if you hear anything.

DRIVER #2
(takes paper)
Everything alright, Graham?

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Course! Just got to keep busy in my old age. Can't all be brainless vegetables like you lot!

The drivers laugh as GRAHAM starts to walk away.

CUT TO:

18. INT. GRAHAM AND GRACE'S HOUSE - NIGHT

RYAN is on his tablet, scrolling through different social media apps. He is looking for any information.

The camera pans to show a group of phones on charge.

GRACE walks past him with a duvet, she moves to the second sofa where THE DOCTOR is laid out, asleep.

Panning shot: Along the DOCTOR'S body as she once again starts to glow with a bright regeneration energy.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Ryan, look --

RYAN SINCLAIR
Wow.

GRACE lays the duvet over the DOCTOR. Kneels. Checks her pulse. Pauses with confusion, moving her hand over the Doctor's wrist.

GRACE O’BRIEN
She's got two separate pulses.

THE DOCTOR loudly exhales. As she does so, a ball of regeneration energy comes out of her mouth. The ball slowly floats away.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Oh my god. What is that?

GRACE O’BRIEN
I don't know.

CUT TO:

19. INT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

RAUL and RAHIM are stood around the STRANGE VISITOR. The creature is crouched down, in a defensive stance.

RAHIM, still holding the tools used to cut open the metal of the portal, rushes towards the VISITOR.

RAHIM
Let's see it's face!

POV RAHIM: He reaches towards it.

THE VISITOR snaps up and leaps towards the camera.

CUT TO:

20. EXT. SHEFFIELD TOWN CENTRE

High above the people. Flecks of the purple lights spread around the city. Scanning for information. Absorbing power. Not enough for people to notice yet.

The glow of regeneration energy floats up to one of the lights. It absorbs the energy greedily.

LIGHT'S POV: Red overlay of the city, power and information causing surges of yellow light. The regeneration energy has left a faint trail, to Graham and Grace's house. Which is covered in a deep orange. Lots of power there.

CUT TO:

21. INT. GRAHAM AND GRACE'S HOUSE - NIGHT

GRACE, GRAHAM, RYAN, YAZ have all regrouped. Gathered around the still sleeping DOCTOR.

Suddenly THE DOCTOR shoots up.
THE DOCTOR
(commanding)
Everybody get behind me. Now.

THE DOCTOR shoots out of her place on the sofa and stands, protectively in front of the group.

The purple light rushes into the room and pauses in front of THE DOCTOR.

THE DOCTOR
What are you? Why are you here?

The light continues to hover in place.

THE DOCTOR
(Goes to reach into pocket then remembers again)
Ahh! Still no sonic. I don’t suppose you could just tell me what you are?

The light crackles.

THE DOCTOR
No, of course not. It's never been that simple.
(Thinking)
You found us because my body is surging with energy. Raw power.
(Snatching Ryan's phone)
If you like power.
(Quickly rips the phone apart)

RYAN SINCLAIR
Hey!

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Leave it son.

THE DOCTOR
(Holds up exposed circuitry and battery)
Let's see if how you like this.

THE DOCTOR thrusts her hand holding the phone circuits and battery into the light.

The power of it shocks her backwards, without the phone.

The light rushes out of the room.

RYAN SINCLAIR
All my stuff is on there!
THE DOCTOR
(big grin)
Not anymore!
(She stretches)
Y'know! I think that nap did me the world of good.
(to Grace)
Very comfy sofa!
(Rushes to the front door, turns back to the group)
C'mon then! Keep up!

22. INT./EXT. GRACE'S CAR - NIGHT

GRACE driving, GRAHAM in the passenger seat. THE DOCTOR is in the back, wedged between RYAN and YASMIN.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Where are we going?

THE DOCTOR
Ryan? Have you got that find my phone app, thingy?

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Course he does! Loses he phone all the time.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Thanks, Graham.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
It's on my phone, but it's still at the house. Charging. It was dead after the thing on the train.

THE DOCTOR pull two phones out of her tattered coat. Grace and Graham's phones. She hands one to Graham.

THE DOCTOR
Directions. Fast as you can.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Tapping on his phone quickly. Next left love.

YASMIN KHAN
Where are we going?

RYAN SINCLAIR
(Realising)
Oh! You are using the GPS on my phone to find where that thing is going!

THE DOCTOR
Absolutely, clever boy. That light thing absorbed everything on your phone like a hungry, hungry hippo.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Wait - Everything.

THE DOCTOR
(serious face)
Everything.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Left again, love. It's just down this road.

YAZ smirks at RYAN as the car pulls left.

CUT TO:

23. INT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

THE VISITOR stands over the two bodies of RAUL and RAHIM. The purple light arrives.

THE VISITOR stands looking at the light as it releases the energy into THE VISITOR.

Headlights shine in from the window. THE VISITOR pushes through the garage door, tearing a hole into it.

CUT TO:

24. EXT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

THE VISITOR smashes through the garage door. Just as THE DOCTOR, YASMIN and RYAN jump out of the car.

THE DOCTOR
Bingo!
(yelling at THE VISITOR)
Oy!

THE VISITOR turns to look at the group.

THE DOCTOR
(authoritative)
Stay there!
(quietly to YAZ)
I was expecting a orb, light thingy? Were you?

GRAHAM and GRACE join the group.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Is that another alien?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Beats me.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Looks like it.

The Doctor starts walking towards THE VISITOR.

THE VISITOR turns and runs away.

THE DOCTOR gives chase.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Is she running after it?

YASMIN KHAN
Don't just stand there!

YASMIN starts to run after THE DOCTOR.

RYAN and GRACE follow behind.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Now you are all running after it?

THE VISITOR starts to glow with a purple surge. It moves incredibly quickly.

THE DOCTOR and YAZ have to stop. It is too fast.

THE DOCTOR
(breathless)
I wasn't expecting to run this soon.
Still - fizzing.
(gestures to her body)

RYAN SINCLAIR
(from GARAGE door)
In here!

THE DOCTOR and YAZ turn. They walk towards RYAN.

CUT TO:

25. INT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

GRACE is stood by the bodies of the mechanics. She has just finished checking the pulse of RAUL.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Two men here. That - thing must have killed them.
(examining the bodies)
If I didn't know better. I would say they were electrocuted.

YASMIN KHAN
(examines the bodies)
You're right. They have electrical burns. Bad ones.

GRACE O’BRIEN
No pulse at all. Heart stopped, suddenly.

THE DOCTOR
I'm sorry you had to see this.

GRACE O’BRIEN
I'll find something to cover them.

YASMIN KHAN
I'll see if I can find out who they were.

THE DOCTOR
Thank you. Thank you both. I'm sorry you have to be here. I'm sorry you have to see this. I'm sorry I haven't figured anything out yet.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Over here! This is the thing!

THE DOCTOR leaves GRACE and YAZ to work. Heads over to RYAN.

RYAN SINCLAIR
This is it! It was in the woods. But it was different then.

THE DOCTOR
Different? Different how?

RYAN SINCLAIR
I dunno. It was, like, glowing. Like those light things we keep seein'.

THE DOCTOR
It's not like anything I've seen before. And let me tell you, I don't exaggerate when I say I have seen everything. Well, mostly everything.
RYAN SINCLAIR
So you don't know what it is?

THE DOCTOR
Not yet.
(frustrated)
If I had my sonic, I could do a full diagnostics scan. Trace origin and maybe track our friend.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Can't we still use the phone app?

THE DOCTOR
No, the signal leads us to here. We don't need to track here. We already found here.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Right, I see. My mistake.

THE DOCTOR
(excited)
OH!
(Ryan and GRAHAM jump)
A sonic! I could build one! I'm good at building things. I assume!

THE DOCTOR rushes off deeper into the garage. RYAN and GRAHAM are left staring.

CUT TO:

26. INT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Deeper into the garage, around tools, boxes and discarded parts, YAZ and RYAN are exploring.

YAZ has her torch on, looking for information. She shines her torch onto a desk.

She moves over and finds an invoice.

YASMIN KHAN
(reading)
Raul Malik. I think that might one of your victims.

She opens the drawer of the desk. RYAN is stood around, looking uncomfortable.

RYAN SINCLAIR
I'm sorry about all of this.

YASMIN KHAN
What do you mean?
RYAN SINCLAIR
Getting you involved. If I hadn't called -

YASMIN KHAN
Ryan don't be daft. It's me. Did you ever know me to avoid something weird?

RYAN SINCLAIR
I don't know. I never really knew you after primary. That was almost ten years ago. You might be different now.

YASMIN KHAN
(looking through more documents)
I could say the same about you.

RYAN SINCLAIR
(small laugh)
Not really. Not going nowhere me.

YASMIN KHAN
(Sighs)
I know the feeling.
(she picks up a driver’s license.)
Rahim Funar. Only twenty-three.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Do you think she is an alien?

YASMIN KHAN
What?

RYAN SINCLAIR
The woman. What do you think of her?

YASMIN KHAN
(thinking)
I don't know. She might be. Wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen to me tonight.

CUT TO:

27. INT. GARAGE WORKSHOP - NIGHT

THE DOCTOR stands surrounded by equipment and assorted junk. This garage wasn't just for cars. It is filled with an assortment of everyday appliances.

Blenders, toasters, spoons, old mobile phones (very old - no touch screen), car batteries, Christmas lights, rusted tools, broken TVs.

The Doctor wraps some cables around herself as she starts to rustle through the old pieces. She has discarded her old coat; it lies forgotten on the floor.

GRAHAM and GRACE watch as she moves frantically from box to box.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
You don't look like an alien.

THE DOCTOR
(still working)
You should have seen me a few hours ago. My whole body changed. Every cell in my body was burning. Changing. Some of them are still at it now. Reordering, regenerating.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Sounds painful love.

THE DOCTOR
You have no idea.
(pauses)
There's this moment, when you are sure you are about to die, and then - you're born, somebody new, it's terrifying.
(Turns to look at the pair)
Right now, I am a stranger to myself. I can feel who I used to be, a voice, voices in the back of my head and a call towards who I am. I have to hold my nerve and trust all these new instincts. Shape myself around them. Born again, new, but with those voices still with me.
(Beat, back to working)
I'll be fine. In the end. At least, I usually am.

THE DOCTOR spins around.

THE DOCTOR
No. I will be. Because you guys need help. And if there is one thing, I am certain of, it's that when people need help, I never refuse.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(Looks at collection of rubbish. Massive smile)
Right. This is gonna be fun!

Fast cuts: THE DOCTOR pushes GRACE and GRAHAM away and pulls the partition closed.

- Root through her collected stuff, picking stuff up, feeling weight, throwing things away.

- Hammers tubing and cables, sculpting them together.

- Solders circuitry together, pulling apart old appliances and adding small things to each little piece of circuitry.

- Pulls some of the metal, lighting off the mysterious portal.

- Grinds down some of the metal and lighting together.

- Melts the ground pieces into a liquid.

- Pulls out the spoons. Welding gloves and goggles on!

- Melting down the spoons, good old Sheffield steel!

- Puts out small fire.

- Hits the pieces together with a large hammer.

- Throws away hammer, pulls out larger hammer.

- SMASH! CRACK! Pushing the debris away.

THE DOCTOR
(pulling open the partition)
Ta-da!

Sitting in her eager hands, sits the new sonic. Handmade, a bit wonky, made from a mix of appliances and unknown alien tech. It has a soft glow coming from it that stretches the length of the body, this glow increases in intensity when the device is in use.

With a proud flourish, she activates the sonic for the first time. Sparks and smoke flies from the device.

THE DOCTOR
(Hitting the back of the sonic)
Should be fine.

RYAN and YAZ reappear.

YASMIN KHAN
I've found who our victims are.
(nodding towards the corner where the men lay dead with a tarp covering them)
Rahim and Raul. Two mechanics. There is a tow truck in the back. I think these men found the strange - thing out in the woods. Judging by the tools around it, I think they wanted to strip it for parts.

RYAN SINCLAIR
And then that, other thing, found them and didn't like what they were doing.

GRACE O’BRIEN
We have to find it. We can't have other people getting hurt!

THE DOCTOR starts scanning the portal device with the new sonic.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Did you just build that?

THE DOCTOR
Sonic screwdriver. Well, I call it a screwdriver. It's more of a multi-purpose device.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Like a Swiss army knife?

THE DOCTOR
(serious)
Only an idiot carries a knife.
(more cheerful)
But yeah, basically.

YASMIN KHAN
What are you doing with it?

THE DOCTOR
Scanning it's logs for a place of origin.

YASMIN KHAN
You can do that?

THE DOCTOR
Oh yeah. Except.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(Pause)
These readings are all wrong. The planet is has come from, it can't have.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Why not?

THE DOCTOR
It was destroyed. Thousands of years ago.
(more scanning)
There's more. It's a transportation frame. Basically, it rips open a hole in the fabric of space, pushes whatever, or whoever, through and stitches it up again. The amount of power needed for that is immense. Far more than this tiny little city would be able to generate.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Oi, watch it. That's my city you are talking about.

THE DOCTOR
(serious again)
Look. I really appreciate all of your help. But there is something out there. Something even I am not sure about. I can't ask you to risk yourselves to help me.

GRACE O’BRIEN
Who's asking love?

YASMIN KHAN
Yeah, we have been talking.

RYAN SINCLAIR
We want to help you.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Yeah, I mean. Like I said, this is my city. I grew up here. Last thing I want is to see an alien monster rip it apart looking for goodness knows what.

THE DOCTOR gives the group a massive grin. She hugs the nearest person, GRAHAM, who is stunned.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Alright, alright. Now, what do we do now? Where is that thing?

THE DOCTOR
Ah! Now. That I am not so sure of.

YASMIN KHAN
I thought you could track it, using your sonic Swiss-army knife?

THE DOCTOR
Screwdriver, and no. This thing is just transport. A big door, it can't tell me anything about where the creature has gone.

GRAHAM grabs his phone as it rings. The group looks over to him as his finishes his conversation.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
No, mate. Thank you. That is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
(putting his phone away)
Always ask a bus driver!

CUT TO:

28. EXT. SHEFFIELD STREET BACK ALLEY - NIGHT

Midnight approaches. A man, DEAN, black, early thirties, drunk, is walking home through the back alley, eating a kebab.

DEAN is stumbling, throwing different pieces of salad behind him as he walks.

A noise comes from the bins to the side of the alley way. The noise causes DEAN to stop.

He stumbles towards the source of the noise.

Sitting there, huddled up is THE VISITOR.

DEAN looks at the creature. Then laughs to himself.

DEAN
Halloween's next month mate.

THE VISITOR tries to move past, DEAN blocks his way.

DEAN continues to eat his kebab.

He throws his tomato at THE VISITOR; the salad bounces off his head.

DEAN laughs as he throws more pieces, lettuce, cucumber, all the pieces bounce off THE VISITOR.
DEAN
Eat my salad, Halloween.

THE VISITOR makes another attempt to move away, DEAN pushes THE VISITOR back.

Pan away as THE VISITOR starts to glow with electricity.

DEAN screams as electricity surges around them.

THE VISITOR looks up, sees the glowing orbs heading towards something. A POWER-STATION outside of Sheffield.

CUT TO:

29. EXT. BLACKBURN MEADOWS POWERSTATION - NIGHT

The PowerStation is a hive of activity. Orbs of different sizes and brightness move around, sucking as much power as they can get.

Out of the darkness, THE DOCTOR leads GRAHAM, GRACE, RYAN and YASMIN.

THE DOCTOR
Hi! Us again!

The group take a few steps towards the orbs. The balls of light seem to stop. Watching them.

THE DOCTOR
We are not a threat. We are here to help you. We just need to know why you are here.

The orbs continue their work. More and more power is being absorbed.

THE DOCTOR
Right, Plan B.

GRACE jumps up, she throws a car battery at the orb. The battery pops, but the orb continues its work, as if nothing had happened.

More orbs realise what is happening and start to hover towards the group.

THE DOCTOR
Okay. Plan C!

RYAN SINCLAIR
What was Plan C?

THE DOCTOR
Run!
The group run away from the orbs. The orbs don't seem too enthusiastic about chasing the group and just return to the power cables.

THE DOCTOR
Interesting.
(The group stops)
Normally, when I run, something chases me.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
(breathless)
This normal for you then?

THE DOCTOR
I'd say it's a weekly occurrence. They aren't interested in us. Just the power.
(realisation)
Of course! They want to power up the transport! They will drain the whole PowerGrid before they get even close to enough power. We have to find a way to stop them.

Suddenly, THE VISITOR appears. It has run the whole way from Sheffield.

THE DOCTOR
Behind me! Now!

The visitor stops in its tracks. It seems to be watching the group.

THE DOCTOR scans the creature with her sonic.

THE DOCTOR
(frustrated)
These readings don't make sense.

GRACE O’BRIEN
What is it?

THE DOCTOR
This is a creature of almost pure energy, very little organic life. I know of a few species like that, but none that would give a reading like this.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Maybe your sonic do-dah isn't working right?

THE DOCTOR
No, I've calibrated and recalibrated.
(Quick scan of Ryan)
So unless you are not human, the sonic is working perfectly.

THE DOCTOR faces THE VISITOR.

THE DOCTOR
What are you? Why are you here?

THE VISITOR tries to communicate, with a series of sparks and crackles. THE DOCTOR seems to be growing more frustrated.

THE DOCTOR
I don't understand. This brain-fog is clouding my every judgement. I don't know what I should do.

GRACE steps from behind the Doctor.

GRACE O’BRIEN
You told us about your - condition. You said you just need to trust your instincts. I trust your instincts. What are they telling you to do?

THE DOCTOR
(frustrated, doubtful)
Gang. Stand down.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Ey? What do you mean stand down?

THE DOCTOR
If my instincts are right. This creature will not hurt us. Stand aside.

The group all reluctantly move to the side. THE VISITOR takes it's chance and runs past them towards a roof.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Well. We are still alive, that's something.

RYAN SINCLAIR
What are we going to do now though?

YASMIN KHAN
Yeah. We can't let it destroy the power-grid.

THE DOCTOR
And we won't let it. Follow me.
The group heads in the direction THE VISITOR went in.

CUT TO:

30. EXT. ROOFTOP - NIGHT

THE DOCTOR, YASMIN, GRAHAM, RYAN and GRACE arrive to a scene in chaos. THE VISITOR stands in the Centre of the rooftop. The orbs of light are passing their power to the creature.

THE VISITOR starts to draw out a circle in the air. Energy is flowing around it, the circle starts to appear, but the energy isn't enough, and it fizzles out.

THE DOCTOR
It's trying to get home.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
What do you mean?

THE DOCTOR
See that circle? It's using the same technology as the device at the garage. It's opening a portal to get home.
(Looks at the orbs)
But there isn't enough. There isn't enough power on the whole planet at this point in time.

GRACE O’BRIEN
So what are we going to do?

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Yes, how do we stop it?

THE DOCTOR
We aren't going to stop it. We are going to help it.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Help it?! It killed three people. We need to kill it. To lock it away. We need to-

GRACE O’BRIEN
Graham O’Brien! We have a living creature in front of us. It might not be anything we have seen before, but it is still living. It's alone and a long way from home. It's scared and angry. I thought you, of all people would have more compassion for something that is scared and angry.
GRACE O’BRIEN (CONT'D)
(towards The Doctor)
You do what you need to.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Grace...
(To the Doctor)
What do you need us to do?

Grace gives him an approving smile.

The Doctor looks around and then has an idea. She gathers the group.

THE DOCTOR
We need to cause a massive power surge. All of Yorkshire will likely suffer a blackout, but if we keep the power flowing, it might just work.

YASMIN KHAN
But you said there wasn't enough power on the whole planet. How can one powerplant in Yorkshire be enough.

THE DOCTOR
It won't but I am going to give it a little helping hand.

RYAN SINCLAIR
What do you-

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
She knows what she is doing, come on.

GRACE, GRAHAM, RYAN and YASMIN head down towards the control room.

The Doctor stands alone on the roof, she strides towards the Visitor.

THE DOCTOR
Hello There!

The VISITOR turns to "look" at her.

THE DOCTOR
I know what you are trying to do. You want to get home.

The VISITOR continues to stare, unsure of what to do.

THE DOCTOR
I'm going to help you. I'm going to give you the power you need
(She starts to glow with regeneration energy)
I'm going to give you all the power you. Because I am The Doctor. I am The Doctor, and I will always help those who need it.

The Doctor explodes into regeneration energy, the orbs around her start to absorb the power and pass it to the VISITOR.

THE VISITOR seems to realise what is happening, it starts to create the circle portal, it seems more stable now.

CUT TO:

31. INT. BLACKBURN MEADOWS POWERSTATION - NIGHT.

GRACE, YASMIN, RYAN and GRAHAM are working furiously to keep the power working. They are pushing buttons. The control panel in front of them is blinking with more and more warnings.

RYAN SINCLAIR
This is hopeless. We don't have a clue what we are doing.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
No, it's just a lot of buttons. I felt the same when I first started on the bus. You just have to realise what each does.

RYAN SINCLAIR
And how do we know that?

YASMIN KHAN
You want to be a mechanic! We work them out.

GRACE O’BRIEN
These levers seem to be controlling the flow. We just need to keep the power long enough for the woman to help that poor creature.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Yeah! We seem to be doing a fine job right now.

CUT TO:

32. EXT. ROOFTOP - NIGHT

THE DOCTOR is still sending regeneration energy, exhaustion is appearing on her face.

THE VISITOR has managed to open the portal. It steps in. The orbs are now working furiously to keep the power surging, the portal starts to close.

It flickers.

THE DOCTOR
No, power can't fail now. It would be trapped.

CUT TO:

33. INT. BLACKBURN MEADOWS POWERSTATION - NIGHT

As the group works, a cable snaps and causes an orb to fall out of position. The power is failing.

GRACE O’BRIEN
(pointing)
Look over there! We have a loose cable.

RYAN SINCLAIR
What do we do now?

GRACE O’BRIEN
I'll do it.

GRACE runs out of the room, GRAHAM following her.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Stay here, you two. Keep that power on, no matter what. Ryan, I know you are good at bypassing restrictions, stop the emergency shut off from activating.

RYAN keeps working with the control panel. A worried look on his face.

CUT TO:

34. EXT. BLACKBURN MEADOWS POWERSTATION - NIGHT

GRACE is running towards the loose cable. It is surging with power. RYAN has managed to bypass the emergency shut off.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Grace! What are you doing?

GRACE O’BRIEN
The right thing.

Grace grab hold of the surging cable. She thrusts it hard into the floating orb, transferring the power.

Grace keeps a tight hold as the power surges through her, into the orb.

GRAHAM watches on, helplessly.

CUT TO:

35. EXT. ROOFTOP - NIGHT.

The surge in power has worked. THE VISITOR stands as the portal finishes closing.

As soon as the portal closes, the orbs in the sky disappear, their source of energy gone.

THE DOCTOR stops the regeneration energy. She stumbles over to the edge of the rooftop.

Below her she can see GRAHAM holding GRACE who lies on the floor.

CUT TO:

36. EXT. BLACKBURN MEADOWS POWERSTATION - NIGHT

GRACE lays in GRAHAM's arms.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Oh Grace. I've got you; I've got you.

GRACE O’BRIEN
It felt good. To do it again.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
What do you mean? We've never done anything like this.

GRACE O’BRIEN
No, you silly man. It felt good. To help somebody who was scared and angry, again.

GRACE stares ahead at GRAHAM. She takes a final breath. Dead.

The Doctor, Yaz and Ryan run to the scene. They stand around, not knowing what to say.

Ryan crouches down next to Grace. Graham holds them both in a tight embrace. Tears in his eyes.

37. EXT. GRAHAM AND GRACE'S HOUSE - DAY

RYAN and YAZ stand by YAZ's POLICE CAR. RYAN is slumped over. Nearly defeated.

RYAN SINCLAIR
First my mum. Now nan. Why is it all the best people get taken first? I had so much to learn from her. I was looking forward to that. Now I won't get chance.

YAZ stands next to him, not knowing what to say.

RYAN SINCLAIR
Well, tomorrow, I'm going back up there. I'm going there for her.

YASMIN KHAN
Where?

CUT TO:

38. EXT. HILLTOP IN PEAK DISTRICT - DAY

Same shot from the first scene. But only RYAN is present. He keeps falling, picking himself back up and getting back on his back, only to fall again.

JUMP CUT: Ryan stood by his bike.

JUMP CUT: Ryan falling from his bike.

JUMP CUT: Ryan sat frustrated by the edge of the cliff. He stands up and gets back on his bike.

WIDESHOT: Showing somebody watching RYAN as he falls again. THE DOCTOR.

CUT TO:

39. EXT. CREMATORIUM - DAY

A few days later. The crematorium is surrounded by balloons, it looks more like a wedding than a funeral.

THE DOCTOR and RYAN stand by the entrance. Waiting for somebody.

THE DOCTOR
What time did your dad say he would be here?

RYAN SINCLAIR
Two hours ago.

THE DOCTOR
If he said he'll come.

RYAN SINCLAIR
(anger)
He says a lot of things. He's never been one for being reliable.
(beat)
How can he not be here? She’s, his mum. She would want him here. I want him here.

THE DOCTOR and RYAN look out to the road. Nobody else is coming. They to go outside.

CUT TO:

40. INT. CREMATORIUM - DAY

Balloons fill the room, many people here to celebrate the life of GRACE O’BRIEN.

GRAHAM gives the eulogy

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
Lots of you knew Grace longer than me. So I can't stand here and pretend to know everything about her.
I wasn't her first husband, but she
said I would do for a second attempt.

Murmurs of laughter spread around the room. GRAHAM looks up and sees THE DOCTOR and YASMIN KHAN sat in the back row.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
I can only tell you about the Grace I met, when I thought I didn't have much time left. The, umm the Grace that showed me life had more to offer.
(Beat)
And I know if she was here now, she'd tell us not to be so sad.
You see, I can hear her saying to me:

GRAHAM O’BRIEN (CONT'D)
(Beat)
We had three glorious years, what're you complaining about?
(Beat)
I'm complaining cos I wanted more.
(Beat)
You see Grace was a better person than I could ever be. And I should have gone. And Grace should still be here.

CUT TO:

41. EXT. GRAHAM AND GRACE'S HOUSE - DAY

The Funeral party is happening inside. RYAN, GRACE, YASMIN and THE DOCTOR stand around outside. Getting some air.

THE DOCTOR
What did you mean? In your speech, about not having time left.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
I, urmm, I had cancer. Strictly speaking, I'm still in remission. Grace was my chemo nurse. It was how we met.
(smiles)
And fell in love. But you see that's what I mean. I shouldn't be here, and she should.

YASMIN KHAN
What about you? Have you got any family?

THE DOCTOR
Not anymore. Lost them a long time ago.

RYAN SINCLAIR
How'd you cope with that?

THE DOCTOR
(thinking)
I carry them with me. Every day. What they would have thought, what they would have done. I make them a part of me. So even though they have gone from the world. They haven't really gone.

GRAHAM O’BRIEN
That's something Grace would have said.
(Smiles)

YASMIN KHAN
So, all of that stuff. The stuff that we can't talk about. That's normal for you, is it?

THE DOCTOR
(shrugging)
I'm just a traveler. If I see people who need help, I do what I can.
(beat)
But right now, I'm a traveler without a ship. I've stayed too long; I really need to get back to finding my TARDIS.

With that, THE DOCTOR starts to walk down the street.

YASMIN KHAN
Doctor? -- Can I just say?
(pause)
You really need a change of clothes.

THE DOCTOR
(Looking down at the tattered remains of THE TWELFTH DOCTOR'S clothes)
Right. Yeah. Maybe.
(looking up)
It's been a long time since I bought women's clothes.

CUT TO:

42. INT. CHARITY SHOP.

YAZ, RYAN and GRAHAM stand in front of a curtain. THE DOCTOR is behind it trying on clothes. Piles of rejected clothing surround the group.

THE DOCTOR
Nope.
(Throws something out)
Not that one.
(another)
That will never work.
(A third thing thrown out.)
YES! Now that is what I want.

The curtain is ripped open. THE THIRTEENTH DOCTOR stands there. Long, beige overcoat. A t-shirt bearing a rainbow symbol. Pale blue trousers, not quite reaching her feet, held up with suspenders. Sturdy boots cover her feet.

YASMIN KHAN
That's what you are going for?

THE DOCTOR
Yep! But one thing!
(beat)
Got any cash? Empty pockets! Also, I've been thinking about my TARDIS. Do you think you will be able to help me?
