I watched the documentary Fantastic Fungi and was amazed by all the versatile properties of and uses for fungi that I had never known about/considered before. Somehow, that led to this story....which depicts a very unpleasant, murderous fungus that totally doesn't illustrate how adaptive and useful many fungi on Earth can be. I think the fact that most of this story was written in 2020 had something to do with how it turned out. It's definitely a little bit darker than I originally intended, but-- Oops. Spoilers.

Medicine is certainly a fascinating field....but, admittedly, researching fungal infections is not exactly my idea of fun. I'm thankful for doctors that know how to treat them, though. That research certainly made this chapter and the next one very interesting to write. (Also, a big thank you to my doctor and firefighter family members/friends who put up with many hazmat-related questions.)
