Summary: Donna can’t help feeling a little sad for these people.

The people of this world didn’t have hair on their heads, and probably not anywhere on their bodies either, although Donna could only guess at that since they wore clothes. But their heads were feathered, short and downy along the sides and around the backs of their necks, and crests from brow to just past the crown.

Bird-people, graceful, slender, agile, and light-footed, yet flightless, at least under their own power.

Evolution had brought them intelligence, civilisation, and the ability to use tools, but it had taken away a large part of their freedom. Now they needed machines to soar.
