"Oh, the Galápagos Islands!" Zoe exclaimed. "They’re just as amazing as I’ve read about!"
"Why, I haven’t been here in many years," the Doctor replied. "Not since I met an old friend."
"Did you know Charles Darwin, Doctor?"
"Of course I did, my dear." He was pushing his luck with the ‘of course’, but he did like to seem impressive. Jamie, who neither knew nor cared about scientific history, started to wander away before giving a shout. The Doctor rushed to his side. Zoe seemed content to study one of the little tide pools.
"What is it, Jamie?"
"What is that?” He pointed at a large marine iguana sunbathing on a rock. It blinked at them, wholly unconcerned.
"It’s just an iguana. You know, a big lizard. You’ve got lizards in Scotland, haven’t you?"
"Nothin’ like that! Why’s it lookin’ at me like that?”
"It’s just observing you, it’s probably never seen a human being before."
Jamie shrunk back, visibly slightly disgusted. His hand wandered until it could grip the Doctor’s coat in his usual affectionate closeness. “A’ don’ think ah’m meant t’ be here with th’ beasties like that.”
“Relax, it won’t hurt you.” He looked around a little more, hearing the chirping of finches, wondering if he should wander farther into the forest. There was so much to be learned from a place as virtually untouched as this archipelago. This train of thought was interrupted by another shriek. “What is it this time, Jamie?”
“WHAT IS THIS?” He pointed down at his feet where a large tortoise was slowly walking by. “WHY’S IT SO— OH IT TOUCHED ME.”
"It’s a tortoise, Jamie. It’s not going to hurt you." He patted his friend on the shoulder and extracted himself from Jamie’s vice grip. "Zoe! I’m going to do some exploring. Can you keep Jamie away from any lizards?"
