She stood there, unmoving, shaken.

What had she done?

She’d refused him, and he had gone, and she was left with... what?

She had nearly died. A stranger had taken her hand, and with him she had run and flown and feared and triumphed and lived. He had shown her a life, vibrant and thrilling and new, that could have been hers.

And she had said “no.”

The world around her, this street, her future, suddenly seemed gray and still and empty. She loved her mum, and Mickey, too, but regret consumed her. She realized that she had come to one of those defining moments in life, a crossroads, and had hesitated, unsure, sacrificing this chance of adventure and happiness on the altar of obligation.

An amazing, perplexing man had swooped in and upended her life... and she had loved it. He had challenged and confused her, made her feel both insignificant and clever... and had needed her. Needed her?? She didn’t understand how, but she knew it and treasured it.

And she had sent him and his strange, magnificent box away. Gone.

Then, impossibly, that dull, quiet street was filled with color and sound and life again as that enigmatic, beautiful blue box reappeared as if recalled by the aching in her heart.

He came back. She would later found out that that was something he didn’t do, give second chances. But he had - for her.
