The Doctor visits Jack, sometimes, at night. He watches him sleep, in the darkness, where the wrongness of the Fact is somehow right. He’s always gone by the morning.

Sometimes Jack dreams about the TARDIS. He hears her, that soul searching grating sound that somehow shouldn’t represent in his eyes the sound of the universe but yet does. He tries to hold his breath when he is torn from his dreams, searching the fleeing night for the sound, but it’s always gone when he awakes.

The Doctor tells Jack he’s sorry when it is meaningless to the other, in the stillness of the night where the words will hang in the silence for hours to come, the only time when they wouldn’t break him. Somehow, he knows it will help the other go on. Somehow, he knows it will make everything better. Somehow, he knows he’ll never go back. By daybreak, it is raining.

With the night, we daren’t sleep and with the dawn we mustn’t breathe.

And with the rain, we all fall down and wait for slumber’s keep.
