'Whenever you’re lonely, just look at the spaces between your fingers and remember that’s where my fingers fit perfectly.'
Rose blinked and read the card over and over again. The Doctor did not do Valentine's Day. Surely that would be too domestic but then again perhaps after the heartache of the last few days, anything was possible.
They had become separated during their last adventure for nearly three days. This was the longest either of them had been away from the other and it was something neither of them wanted to repeat ever again.
As she read the card again, she felt his cool hand slip into hers.
“This was all I could think about while we were apart,” he said in a quiet voice. “I couldn’t believe how much I missed the feel of your hand in mine, our fingers entwined.”
He gestured to the card she was holding. “I remembered seeing that quote and it gave me the strength to bear the loneliness of the last few days. Kept me strong until we could be together again.”
Hearing the sadness in his voice, Rose wrapped her arms around him, pressing her face into his shoulder. “It’s beautiful, Doctor, thank you. Happy Valentine's day.”
“Happy Valentine's day, Rose,” he replied as he brushed his lips against her forehead.
He did not say he loved her and she did not mind. This small token of his feelings spoke far louder than words ever could and for now it was enough.
