The cold western winds blew across the fields of deep red grass. The second sun was setting in the north and casting a glow across the silver leaves of the trees making them look as if they had caught fire. The birds in the sky had all begun to settle into their nests for the cold night ahead. The novices of the Time Academy were all asleep in their beds preparing for one of the most important days of their life. They had to choose the names that would stay with them for the rest of their lives.
But in a field outside of the citadel were three young Gallifreyans who had not decided what they wished to be called. The eldest, a young boy with thick black hair and dark eyes, stood pacing around the group thinking about names that could, should and possibly would suit him. The young female sat with her hands in her lap, elegance showing through obvious burn marks on her face from experiments gone wrong. She looked curiously down at their third member who lay in the grass with his hands resting behind his head and his eyes closed in contentment.
“Koschei, can you tell your lover to take this seriously? Look at him! He looks as if he looks like he’s about to fall asleep.” Koschei looked down at her with a bored expression.
“Ushas, Theta is always relaxed. When he was told he was going to fail exams he didn’t even flinch.” He finally sat down next to the other boy and ran his fingers lovingly through his blonde locks. “But she is right, Thete. You need to choose your name correctly.” Theta finally opened his eyes and looked at his best friend with deep blue pools of affection. Ushas tilted her head to the side slightly. She loved to watch them both together. They would sometimes spend hours just talking or staring into each other’s eyes. She liked to hear Koschei call his lover Thete. It was a name only they could use, no one else was allowed to call him that no one could call Koschei, Kos.
“I’m not worried Kos. We can help each other to find our names.” He swung his arms out from under his head and sat up, leaning against his lover’s chest. “Ushas, what kind of name do you want?” Ushas placed a hand to her chin and seemed in deep thought. Finally she pushed her brown hair out of her eyes and gave a small smile.
“I want a name that makes me feel… royal, respected! I want something exotic and beautiful but with a hint of mischief. Think you can come up with that, genius boy?” Theta closed his eyes and scanned through his mind for words, phrases, names that showed the true Ushas.
“How about a name that a Princess or Queen might use?” Ushas nodded with interest and Theta gave her a winning grin. “Princeza?” Ushas shot him a look and he knew he’d made a mistake. “Ok how about… Regina? Regala? Rani? Lindo? There’s a whole load you can use!” Ushas quickly sat up straight.
“What did you say?”
“I said there loads you can use.”
“No before that!”
“I didn’t say Theta!” Ushas groaned in frustration. Theta knew exactly what name she meant. They used to call her Rani whenever she would yell at them because they did something wrong. It was an affectionate name they would use though and she now knew what her new name would be.
“I want to be called the Rani.” She couldn’t help but smile when their faces both lit up. “Ok then Theta, You’ve shown that you good but are you the expert? Koschei, what about you?” Koschei looked down into Theta’s eye and leant down to kiss his lips. When he withdrew he gave a sigh.
“I want a powerful name. A name that sums me up. A name that people can fear, can run from. A name that raises me above all others.” Theta looked away from his friend’s distant face. He hated when he talked like that. It scared him. When he spoke of triumph and conquering planets Theta felt like his Koschei was slipping through his fingers and becoming someone he didn’t know. Theta knew there was only one name for a man like this and he had to stop himself from choking on the bitterness of the word.
“Master.” Koschei smiled and looked down at Theta’s face now wet with tears and he tenderly stroked them away. His Koschei had returned. “Now what are we gonna do with you Theta? You’ve given us our names but haven’t thought of one for yourself.” Ushas gave a smile to Theta.
“Come on, let us choose your name?” Theta stood up from Koschei’s grip and looked down at his friends.
“Ok try it.” He crossed his arms and glanced between them. In reality, they didn’t have a clue what to call Theta. He just had too many personalities to put names to. Theta sighed and nodded. “I knew you couldn’t do it, I’m going to bed, and I’ve got a name to think of.” His friends watched as he retreated back into the citadel and Ushas stood up from the grass.
“Koschei, sleep with him tonight, he needs someone.” Koschei nodded and together they walked back to the citadel.
Theta lay in bed staring at the wall. What name could possibly suit him? As far as anyone else in the academy was concerned, he was a nobody. He was the boy at the back of the class who failed exams. He always tried not to let it get to him but sometimes he had no choice. All these students, novices, Gallifreyans hadn’t had a life like he had. His mum had died when he was only young and he didn’t have the best relationship with his dad. All he had was Koschei but he felt like he was losing him too. When his bedroom door opened he snapped his eyes shut hoping they would think he was asleep. When he felt the bed dip beside him he knew it was Koschei. He could hear clothes being thrown to the floor and eventually felt Koschei’s naked chest against his cold back.
“Theta, I know you’re awake, I want you to know I’ll love you whatever name you choose. I mean it. You are so special to me. I feel alone in a room with a thousand people if you’re not there. I am blind in a candle lit room if you’re not there and when I’m with you the drums are quite. You make me better Thete. You’re like my own personal doctor. And that’s your name theta. You’re my Doctor. Goodnight.” Koschei pressed a loving kiss to the back of his lover’s neck and closed his eyes. Theta thought about what Koschei had said and he gave a smug grin.
The next day the cold western winds blew across the fields of deep red grass. The second sun was setting in the north and casting a glow across the silver leaves of the trees making them look as if they had caught fire. The birds in the sky had all begun to settle into their nests for the cold night ahead. The novices of the Time Academy were all asleep in their beds.

She looked curiously down at their third member who lay in the grass with his hands resting behind his head and his eyes closed in contentment.
“Master, I think you should wake your lover up, he looks far too easy.” The Master smiled down at the Rani and gave an understanding smile. He sat down next to the boy and ran his fingers through his thick blonde locks. Finally, he pressed a kiss to his lips and stroked his face. He felt his inside warm up when his lover looked at him with blue eyes.
“I love you, Master.”
“I love you too, my dear Doctor.”
