//The Doctor: Some things are fixed, some things are in a flux, and Pompeii is fixed...That's how I see the universe. All the time every waking second: what is, what was, what could be, what must not. That's the burden of a Time Lord, Donna.//
Humans. What confounding creatures- such great potential, such great ambition. Such drive. If the Time Lords have a legacy, it’s in them- in the great survivors of the universe. That’s what really matters in the end, the ability to self-perpetuate against all odds. There’s a man right now, one of the great unrecognized thinkers of his time, who has a wonderful lecture on the virtues of cockroaches. You should really go look him up now, while its still safe to be seen with him. Well, relatively safe. Well, you might want to make sure there isn’t a blonde around first. Or a man with fugly eyebrows. Well…maybe you should just send him an email.
Yeah, getting back to the topic at hand...
Humans are the great survivors. Of course, that will have consequences. Problem with being a survivor is the people who aren‘t. Humanity, in its basic form, in it’s culture, in its spirit survives- but not without generating and obliterating a few offshoots.
Most people recognize the year 4.5789 billion as the time when humanity underwent an explosive amount of evolution, but they tend to overlook all the earlier tries. My personal favorite is the one happening under your noses right now- exploding humans, flying humans, humans who could turn lead into gold and rewrite each other’s thoughts. There was even said to be, although I seriously doubt this, a man who could travel through time and space through sheer force of will.
Amazing stuff. Amazing. And utterly dangerous.
You lot realized this, of course. You’re not nearly as clever as me, but you do have your merits, and the ability to react to threats. And boy, did you react. Will react. Are reacting right now, as a matter of fact, although I don’t believe that’s anything the general populace is aware of at the moment.
It’s a relatively small percentage that’s affected by the mutated code. Slightly less than 1% of the world. Problem is, that of that 1%, just about all of them were raised with human morals and ethics, when what they really needed was a stronger code to cope with their increased power. Some of them- far too many of them, a disproportionate number in fact, begin to run roughshod over the world. And you fight back- nothing quite like a good war against a very easily externalized threat to bring people together. It might be one of the first truly global efforts your kind undertook, exterminating the metahumans.
Don’t look at me like that. Your kind are more than capable of cruelty when you feel the need for it, and you know it. It’s not quite as bad as it sounds, if that helps at all. For the most part, forced sterilization was used rather than outright killing. Still pretty terrible, though.
Not much I can do about it, however. One of those fixed points in time is the removal of that particular genetic strain from the human gene pool. And in the end all that international cooperation that comes out of it is a good part of the reason why you lot were able to fight off the invading alien hordes. The reason, as a matter of fact. Doesn’t mean I have to like it, or you have to like it, it just is. Nothing about it to be done.
Come along, let’s go. Somewhere a bit more cheerful, perhaps. Have I ever told you about the planet of Barcelona?
