When Ianto’s phone rang, he checked who was calling; seeing it was Tosh, he popped the phone on speaker and continued with what he was doing.

“Tosh! What’s up?”

“Sorry to bother you on your day off. I was looking for that little blue thing you and Jack found last week. I had an idea about what it might be, and I wanted to test my theory, but it’s not in its place in the archives.”

“Ah, right, Jack keeps sneaking it out so he can fiddle with it. Check his desk.”

“I’m studying it, not fiddling with it!” Jack shouted from across the room. “If anyone’s fiddling it’s you. You’re not whipping hard enough. Put your back into it!”

“If I whip any harder, something’s going to break,” Ianto replied.

“Um, sorry I interrupted you. Bye.”

“Tosh? Are you still there?”

Ianto frowned at the phone. “She hung up on me.”

“Good, now maybe you’ll get on with whipping that batter.”

“Slavedriver.” Sighing, Ianto did as he was told.

Ianto’s phone rang again sometime after Sunday dinner, while he and Jack were watching TV. Jack was enraptured, talking a mile a minute, and Ianto found himself trying to cope with two conversations at once.

“What can I do for you Gwen?”

“I was just wondering if you…” Gwen started.

“Hang on a mo. Whippet, Jack! How many times do I have to tell you?”

“Never mind, it’ll wait ‘til tomorrow,” Gwen said hurriedly in Ianto’s ear, then the line went dead as she hung up. Ianto frowned at his phone again. “What’s wrong with everyone today?”

Jack nudged him in the ribs. “Are you sure? I mean, it looked like a greyhound to me.”

“Greyhounds are much bigger, it’s definitely a whippet.”

“It could just be a young greyhound, couldn’t it? I mean, they get puppies at Battersea Dog’s Home too, don’t they?”

“Alright, yes, I suppose it might’ve been, but it wasn’t. I know a whippet when I see one.” Ianto was feeling stubborn.

“Because you know everything?” Jack teased.

Ianto smirked back at his lover. “Exactly.”

By late afternoon, Jack was starting to feel a bit peckish and went looking for a sweet snack; he had something particular in mind. While he was rummaging in the kitchen cupboards, Ianto’s phone rang again; caller ID said it was Owen. Ianto pressed the button to accept the call and had the phone halfway to his ear when he heard Jack yelling something.

“What was that?”

Jack stuck his head into the living room. “I said have you seen my whip? I can’t find it!”

“How should I know where you left your bloody whip? What is it, Owen?” he added into his phone.

“You’re both perverts!” Owen snapped out.

Ianto was confused. “You called me just to tell me that?” There was no reply; Owen had already hung up.

“Found it!” Jack flopped onto the sofa, clutching a walnut whip. “What did Owen want?”

“I have no idea.”
