Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart looked uncertainly at the mouth of the cave. He didn’t approve of this new-fangled writing business at the best of times, but he was particularly unhappy at the sign reading “United Intelligent Tribes: TOP SECRET”. At least, he thought, it wasn’t as if many people would be able to read it.
As usual, the Doctor was at the back of the cave trying to fix his magic box. “Doctor,” said the Brig, “I’ve just got a message from the tribal elders, demanding to know why we’ve spent nearly twenty cowrie shells on useless copper wire.”
“As I’ve told you before, Brigadier, your local politics are no concern of mine.” To avoid further discussion, the Doctor pointedly stopped what he was doing and took a sip from the deep stone bowl next to him; probably one of those herbal infusions Sergeant Benton brewed.
Before the Brig could remonstrate further, one of the Doctor’s gadgets began beeping. “Aha, there’s some alien technology about five miles away. I take it you don’t find my e-lek-tron-iks such a waste of money now, eh?”
Instead of responding directly, the Brig simply said, “Well, we’d better investigate. Will you be taking Bessie?” He indicated the sprightly yellow rollers.
“I don’t think so, your society’s idea of a car has always struck me as the most impractical method of transport ever devised. It’s like walking but with more effort!”
The Brig remained stoic, used to the Doctor’s complaints about the supposedly primitive age he found himself in. “Well, it’s not worth taking a pteranodon for such a short distance, so it seems we’ll go by foot. I’ll send a message to Benton and Jo to meet us there.”

A short while later they arrived at the spot indicated by the Doctor’s machine. A group of reptilian figures were a short distance away, but the UNIT warriors were concealed in the forest. The Doctor nodded in satisfaction. “As I thought,” he said, “Silurians!”
There was a brief pause while the others looked blank. “And?” said Jo, puzzled.
“What do you mean ‘and’?” asked the Doctor, equally puzzled, “They’re Silurians!”
The Brigadier coughed, “Doctor, maybe you should have been taking a bit more of an interest in ‘our local politics’. Those tribal elders I keep telling you about? That’s them.”
“Ah. Well, I suppose that does explain where all those domesticated dinosaurs came from…”
