21: To love with two hearts...

I'm sorry I didn't review this earlier - I've only just come back here, and I must've missed the original posting of these last two chapters.

Magnificent, to borrow your own finale :)

A perfect end to a truly excellent, supremely well-written work, worthy above all of the title 'masterpiece'.

15/10, A+++, Magnifique!

Please do post the sequel here - no idea about the other source aside from Doctor Who, but if this is anything to go on, I for one am perfectly, willing to wait ten chapters of marvellous writing, fresh dialogue and ingenious plot to see the hero around which this site is based :)

Please don't leave us, and please keep in touch!

21: To love with two hearts...

...

*thunk*

...

That noise you just heard was me, falling out of my chair in sheer amazement. After four days of reading, snatching hours that should have been spent studying (I won't tell if you won't), I've finally come to the conclusion. And may I say... WOW.

I read a few issues of Fushigi Yuugi in my teen years, so I did need Wikipedia to refresh my memory as to the manga canon. But my faulty memory aside, you've done the landscape and the characters within it great justice. The Japanese was just enough to keep the alternate setting and different culture clear, but not so much as to bewilder. (I also appreciated the glossaries.) Descriptions were evocative, but not overly flowery. And Houjun was... well, suffice to say that I grew to love him, out of little to no canon experience. Well done!

Speaking of new character love, on the subject of Joss. I admit that the volume and brashness threw me a bit, but I can say that she was NOT a Mary Sue, and thank you for that. When you did eventually bring her into the story, I liked that she started not immediately with the group, but participated in her own side-quest with the villagers and subsisted on her own. That let the reader get a sense for her as an independent character before entwining her with the others. While she definitely possessed flaws (the cussing, the rash temper and the physical imperfections), she was still honest, courageous and took things into her own hands, even if they seemed overwhelming. The romance was subtle and well-paced, and the ending quite realistic (though rather sad). So, in re. Joss, also well done!

And the Doctor. Oh, the Doctor. He melted my heart into a gooey puddle of mush. My secret weakness is sentimental fiction (if tastefully done), and this delivered in spades. Eight's quiet, loving intervention produced with his trademark lack of (obvious) guile, combined with a brilliant mind, a keen sense of humor, a late-blooming streak of cunning toward the end, and inexaustible fonts of mercy... This is Eight in his most essential form, Champion of Life, unwilling to compromise it even at the cost of his own. There really are no words to describe my joy except... *thunk, again* Very, very, VERY WELL DONE!

Brava, brava, bravissima! You have my undying admiration! Where might I find this mysterious sequel? Do tell me soon, I'm all a-pins and needles!

Thank you again for investing so much time and energy into this. I'll be reading it again and again.

Author's Response: Wow. Oh, wow, what a kind, detailed, and thoughtful review! I deeply appreciate it. I also enjoyed your words about Joss; original female characters are a minefield as far as the Mary-Sue thing goes, and I did my best to steer her away from that, so I really appreciate your input on her. And I guess that we both are obviously in love with the Eighth Doctor. ^ ~ As for the sequel, it\'s on FF.net in the FY section under my same pen name, roku kyu, and the title is , \"Hidden Paths on a CloudCast Night.\" I\'m not putting it on Teaspoon, because the Doctor doesn\'t make an appearance until Chapter 11 (spoiler!). However, you\'ve tipped my decision about Bridge on this site: there is one more chapter to Bridge, an epilogue that leads into Hidden Paths. I\'d been debating about putting it on this site, since it\'s a cliffhanger, but after your input, I think I\'ll take the plunge and upload it here. Thanks again for all of your encouragement; it means a great deal to me. Cheers, Roku

*applause* Thanks for gifting us with some emotional closure. It's been such a long ride and it's amazing how you kept it all going. Well done.

Author's Response: Wow, thanks! And thanks for sticking with this story to the end. I really appreciate your input and I\'m very grateful for your compliments! (Had I known that people were reading, I would\'ve gotten off my lazy behind and posted this chapter sooner. :P)

1: A celestial call for help

This is becoming increasingly filmic...And good-filmic too! More soon please!

Author's Response: Gosh, I\'m sorry for my late reply; my job has been insane this week! Anyway, thank you as always, Hydrax; your reviews make my day. It\'s funny, but another reviewer on another site also mentioned Bridge\'s cinematic quality--which is good, I guess, because it sure plays like a movie in my head. Thanks again!
