Two Roads Diverged by LN29 [Reviews - 164] Printer Chapter or Story

1. Prologue by LN29 [Reviews - 16] (1898 words)
So...bit later than I'd promised. It's been a wild few months, culminating in graduation (yay!), writer's block (not-so-yay), and a VERY distracting case of poison ivy (long story short, never get poison ivy on your hands. Trust me on this.) But here we are, at long last. I hope it'll be worth the wait.

As is often the case with my prologues, this is somewhat different in tone from the rest of the story, which is one of the reasons it took me longer than usual. It's mostly foreshadowing/setting up some of the themes of this story, plus my own interpretations of some things in my 'verse. But I think I'm finally satisfied enough with it to move on, and the story itself will pick up almost exactly where Mind Over Matter's epilogue left off. I'm simultaneously excited and terrified for this story, which is unlike anything I've ever attempted before, and hopefully I'll be able to keep up my usual pace. (I have a job starting soon, but hopefully it'll be kind of like school and I'll still have time to write at night like I did before.)

Thanks for sticking with me all this time, and sorry for the cliffhanger-y wait. Here's hope that this will turn out as good as it sounds in my head, and be a worthy continuation of this series. Enjoy!

(Poem stanza at the beginning by Robert Frost.)

2. Chapter 1: Rooftop by LN29 [Reviews - 5] (5463 words)
Well, that took longer than expected. But it's here, and we're off.

If it looks like foreshadowing, there's a good chance that it is. Foreshadowing of WHAT is the big question, of course. And to that I will answer only: spoilers.

3. Chapter 2: Reflection by LN29 [Reviews - 2] (4557 words)
And he's back!!!

Through no fault of his own, the Doctor was rather forced to the sidelines in 'Mind Over Matter.' And while putting him in that position is in itself an important moment for his character (and Rose's), it's not who he usually is. He needs to step back into the role he was forced to vacate, and thus, here he is. A bit worse for the wear, but back in business.

This story can only really be told properly from both their perspectives anyway. So it'll be divided equally between their POVs, which is going to be an adventure for me as far as separating their voices yet telling one story. But anyway, here we go.

4. Chapter 3: Triangulation by LN29 [Reviews - 3] (4480 words)
Sorry about the slower than usual pace. This story is trickier than usual because it involves basically taking the episode transcript and going through line by line to see which lines will stay, which will go, and which will be altered in some way, and figuring out what elements of the plot have to stay the same in order for things to play out in a certain way and which will have to be changed (and what impacts will those changes have), and then integrating that with the story I'm trying to tell. It'll get a bit easier once things take off, I think, but for now I appreciate your patience.

Jackie's character here is at a different point than what we see in the show, so that will have an impact on how her part in this plays out. Really, everyone's parts are going to be altered based on the changed dynamics of this 'verse. Oi...

5. Chapter 4: Torchwood by LN29 [Reviews - 2] (4801 words)
And here we have the first (but not the last) significant change from the show's events. The big question is, of course, how that will impact things later. We will be diverging more from the script as the story goes on...they start from the same place, but might not end the same way. We'll just have to see, won't we?

I had forgotten how much I dislike Yvonne. Now I remember.

6. Chapter 5: Prisoner by LN29 [Reviews - 6] (4102 words)
Sorry this is so late! This chapter gave me so much trouble (had to rewrite pretty much the whole thing...ugh), and work got in the way, and it's all been rather chaotic. But it's here, in all its writer's block-inducing glory, and I'll do my absolute best to not have a gap like this again. I want to be as reliable as I can be with this story, so I'll try to keep to the every other day schedule as much as possible.

I hope you guys are liking this story. And, again, sorry!

7. Chapter 6: Void by LN29 [Reviews - 3] (4825 words)
Just watched Army of Ghosts/Doomsday again, to help with the writing of this story. It hurt the first time I saw it, and darn it, it still hurts now. The things I do for you people...

8. Chapter 7: Breach by LN29 [Reviews - 2] (4173 words)
We're really starting to go off-script here. The Doctor is NOT in the mood to play nice at the moment, and really, who can blame him? He's had a rough week.

Also...the wall makes its first appearance! Eeeeek...

9. Chapter 8: Intelligence by LN29 [Reviews - 3] (4407 words)
The more I look at them, the more I realize that these episodes have the most insane pacing EVER. They're just nonstop action from the get-go. So here we're going off-script to give our characters a second to breathe.

Also, switching perspectives means that I have to pay attention to whose head I'm in, and when, since certain events really need to be told by one or the other. It's interesting having them together and yet having the story told by both, and what's even more interesting is the fact that they sometimes assess situations differently, or maybe even misread things from time to time. But as I said before, this story can really only be told by both, and there are a couple parts in future chapters that I have been anticipating pretty much since Step by Step. Just sayin...

10. Chapter 9: Interruption by LN29 [Reviews - 1] (4329 words)
Happy Independence Day (a bit late, I know) to all my American friends out there. Hope the hurricane didn't rain on too many cookouts!

We're nearly through AoG, shockingly. Doomsday will take up a larger percentage of this story, for obvious reasons, and things are about to take off (and hopefully will be easier to write so I can pick up the pace...you'd think being out of school would give me MORE time to write). Plus the characters will finally be caught up on what is going on, which will be nice.

As for Jackie and what she does here, I do think it's in-character for her. She's not as competent as Rose (hence she didn't get as far), and things will unfold somewhat differently due to their differences, but let's not forget that this is the woman who chased her daughter across a UNIVERSE in Journey's End. And that's not even considering the character development she got in SbS and its successors. Was it smart? No. Was it safe? Heck no. But since when have the women in the Doctor's life ever cared about those things?

11. Chapter 10: Truth by LN29 [Reviews - 3] (5249 words)
This is really the chapter that made me realize just why this particular story had to be the sequel to Mind Over Matter.

Please let me know if you like it. I do. :)

12. Chapter 11: Cybermen by LN29 [Reviews - 2] (4339 words)
*Peeks out from behind computer apologetically*

Sorry this is so absurdly late! My work schedule went completely nuts, and I literally haven't had the time or the energy to write a chapter until now. But I'm still here, still going with this, and I'll try to keep up a more frequent pace if it's humanly possible. And with this chapter, we bring Army of Ghosts to a close. We still have a long way to go, and it's not going to be an easy road, but still, this is a bit momentous, isn't it?

13. Chapter 12: Dalek by LN29 [Reviews - 2] (5941 words)
Otherwise known as the chapter of endless HTML tags.

Most of the 'sass-off' (great way to describe it, TheLonelyCompanionn) is taken straight from the episode, since I don't think there's much I could do to improve it, and their dialogue is hard enough to write as it is. But we're getting more and more off-script in terms of how events are unfolding, and some of the biggest changes are yet to come.

14. Chapter 13: Choices by LN29 [Reviews - 12] (4970 words)
Introducing: the cliffhanger several years in the making.

I'm not sure whether to apologize or cackle maniacally. So I'll just brace myself for a storm of my own, and hope for the best...

15. Chapter 14: Inconceivable by LN29 [Reviews - 15] (5218 words)
Well, THAT last cliffhanger got your attention.

Yes, this chapter title is deliberate. What can I say...it amused me. And I am SO sorry for the delay. This chapter gave me more trouble than anything I've written in a long time, and I had work every day since the last chapter was posted, so it's been a rough writing week. But it's here at last, and if the Doctor's thought processes are a bit less coherent or logical than usual, you can't really blame him for it, all things considered.

16. Chapter 15: Hope by LN29 [Reviews - 4] (4972 words)
I have to beg your forgiveness. This has been a very difficult week in terms of my personal life, and things have been so chaotic and emotional that I've struggled to find the time and energy to devote to this, especially with these chapters being so vital in terms of the characters' reactions to chapter 13's revelation. This will hopefully not become a pattern, and I'll do my best to get back to my normal every few days, but please be patient with me if it takes a bit to get my head back in the game.

On the plus side (it's probably bad that THIS is a plus side), Rose is in shock, so her thoughts aren't much more organized than the Doctor's at this precise point in time. The repercussions haven't quite sunk in fully...they're almost too monumental for her to process right now. That'll come once she has a second to breathe. Once they both do, really. Poor things...they really need a vacation.

But the tide is beginning to turn at last...at least for the moment.

17. Chapter 16: Parallels by LN29 [Reviews - 7] (4747 words)
Pete...surprised me...in this chapter. I was not expecting his characterization to go quite in the direction it did, but the more I looked at his lines in the actual episode, the more I knew that the Doctor's current state of mind would not react well to what Pete was saying.

Thanks for your patience!

18. Chapter 17: Iridescence by LN29 [Reviews - 5] (4958 words)
I know, I know, it's been a solid week since my last update. I owe you a thousand apologies, and the only consolation I can offer is that it frustrated me as much as it did you. But I have conquered the writer's block (plus monstrously busy schedule) at last, and this chapter contains a connection/'reread bonus' to Mind Over Matter that I am EXTREMELY proud of.

We're past the halfway point for this story, and the plotlines are beginning to streamline. Though when I think of what we still have left...yikes. So much still has to happen, and I'm simultaneously excited and terrified with what's to come. Now, I've kept you waiting long enough (SORRRRRRYYYYY!), so let's get going!

19. Chapter 18: Collaboration by LN29 [Reviews - 6] (6465 words)
Still here!

So what did you guys think of the new Doctor? I liked him, and I think Peter Capaldi is going to do a great job. I'm looking forward to seeing him in future episodes, though I'm a bit apprehensive about some of the upcoming storylines and the direction they'll take things. But I'm excited for them as well.

Anyway, back to our story...

20. Chapter 19: Genesis by LN29 [Reviews - 9] (5377 words)
*Throws open doors, Tenth Doctor style*

Did you miss me?

So. Yeah. I definitely owe you an explanation for that absurd two week gap, not to mention the world's biggest apology for making you all wait so long. It basically comes down to work. We're in the busiest time of the year for my job, and since we mostly employ students, they all went back to school recently, which in turn led to me getting a major increase in the hours they need me to work, which led to me coming home at the end each day completely and utterly exhausted, and...you get the picture.

Fortunately, we can only get less busy from here on out, and this accursed chapter is finally out of the way (it was not one of the nice, helpful chapters that just sort of writes itself, let's put it that way.) I can't promise I'll ever get back to Mind Over Matter update speed, but I can promise that I'll try to update every few days like I was before, and I will do my absolute best to never, ever have us go this long without an update again. Again, I am so very sorry, and if it's any consolation, I missed this story and all of you terribly. But I'm back, and I will see this through!!!

As an aside, sorry about the cliffhanger and what happens to cause it. And with that little tidbit to terrify you all, on with the show at last! YAY!

21. Chapter 20: Ascension by LN29 [Reviews - 4] (7086 words)
Only one week this time! That's a bit better, right? Right...?

Also, the most recent episode appears to be copying my brain. I mean...the Doctor as a little kid?! In a scene involving the current companion and something under the bed?! I may or may not have freaked out when that scene came onscreen. Plus, I wanted to hug him. Still do, in fact.

We're ramping up to the big chapters. The storm is almost upon us, folks...

22. Chapter 21: Countdown by LN29 [Reviews - 8] (7047 words)
Guess who finally had a few days off from work and actually had time to sit down and do something other than work and sleep?!?!?!

Things are coming to a head now, and the next few chapters are the ones we've all been anticipating/dreading since the epilogue of MoM. I'm excited and nervous all at once, mostly because I know that they're going to be some of the hardest things I've written in a while, but if I can get them right, hopefully they'll be worth it.

Also, let me just say that if MoM gave the Doctor his worst day ever, than I'm pretty sure this day is ranking pretty highly up there as one of Rose's worst. Not that it's a picnic for the Doc either...what a week these two are having. :( And it's not over yet...

Thanks for your patience, and hopefully the length of the past few chapters makes up for the wait a little bit.

23. Chapter 22: Doomsday by LN29 [Reviews - 10] (6296 words)
This chapter. This impossible chapter. Just...yikes.

Plus, the closest thing we've had to a literal cliffhanger since Two was on a rope ladder in Winner Takes All.

24. Chapter 23: Divergence by LN29 [Reviews - 10] (5681 words)
I have nothing to say.

25. Chapter 24: Aftershock by LN29 [Reviews - 5] (6622 words)
Happy 'Who-loween'!

I swear I meant to have this chapter done sooner, but I'd gotten halfway through it before I realized I had to scrap everything I'd written and start over, and that was just a bit demoralizing. However, the result turned out better than I'd imagined, and allowed me to fix several problems that were bogging down the first version, so I'm not complaining. Much.

We're nearly there, now!

26. Chapter 25: Endings by LN29 [Reviews - 7] (7624 words)
Ugh, computer trouble. Because of COURSE that would happen now, when we're so close. Fortunately, things seem to have settled down.

Also, how about that finale? Danny and Clara and Missy and UNIT and Osgood and MISSY and the Brigadier and Santa and OH MY GOSH MISSY!!!!! That about sums up my reaction, I think.

Thank you for your patience, and hopefully the length of this chapter will be worth the wait. It kind of brings us full circle, I think, and that feels very appropriate. :)

27. Epilogue by LN29 [Reviews - 12] (2687 words)
A short-ish epilogue to wrap up this story and this series.

Is this the end of this 'verse? Probably not. We've played out the arc that I started in the original Step By Step story, but I've obviously opened up some pretty big doors for future projects, and my brain is already beginning to come up with some new ideas, at least one of which will be fairly obvious from this epilogue. However, this was always intended to bring a certain amount of closure to this series, and that's what I hope that I've accomplished with both the final chapter and with this ending.

As to future projects, I have one upcoming one that I think might interest some of you. Basically, I've been so busy that I've gotten out of the habit of writing every day, and I'd like to get back to that. And I have a bunch of ideas from this 'verse floating around in my head that aren't big enough for their own stories, but still want to be heard.

So: starting on Dec. 1, and going until Christmas, I'll be writing a new short story every day. They'll all be in this 'verse (and probably all in one story, just with each chapter being a separate standalone story), be they missing scenes from the longer stories (especially the trilogy), insight into side-characters (Paz, Kaye, Mishell, etc), glimpses into the future after this story ends, whatever else I can come up with. Some will be fluffy, some not so much, and I can't promise they'll be very long or very polished. But I'm excited to see where they'll take us, and hopefully they'll make up for all the times I made you wait for this one. Call it a Christmas present.

And with that, we return to the poem that inspired this whole story, and finally wrap up Two Roads Diverged. Thank you for coming on this journey with me, and I hope it was as worthwhile for you as it was for me!
