Normally, when Sarah Jane's mobile rang at three o'clock in the morning, she expected explosions or kidnappings or possibly alien invasions. Probably alien invasions. She did not, generally speaking, expect loudly giddy young women. "Sarah Jane!" Maria yelled out of the speaker, sounding tinny and distant, connection riddled with static. "Oh my god! You'll never guess where I am!" It wasn't that she wasn't happy to hear from Maria -- she was always happy to hear from Maria, of course, and it had been ages since those last panicked end-of-term phone calls when all of Maria's final papers had gone due at once, in the same week she'd had her very first final exam as an actual journalism student at Cardiff University, which was also the same week that some alien invasion force or other had arrived and Torchwood had screwed the whole thing up again and things had gotten so messy that Maria had needed Sarah Jane's help to get it sorted before the whole world went all pear-shaped (literally) -- but, well, look at the time. "Maria, do you know what time it is?" Sarah Jane asked. She tried to sound calm and not at all cranky, but really. "No!" Maria yelled, even more excitedly. "I have no idea! I don't even know what year you're in! I mean, you must've met me already, I suppose, because you recognized my voice, but I don't know when you are at all! What year is it?" Oh, dear. That didn't bode well, did it? Sarah Jane was suddenly wide awake. Wide awake and suspicious. "Maria, where are you?" "Oh my god!" Maria squealed, even more excitedly than before. "Sarah Jane! You'll never guess! This is amazing!" "You're on another planet, aren't you?" Oh, she'd known that Cardiff University was going to be a bad idea, she'd just known it. "Yes! How did you know?" Sarah tried not to laugh. "It's my special superpower." "You have superpowers now?" Maria asked, sounding slightly distracted but very interested. "When did you get those?" Sarah didn't even try not to laugh that time. And then there were some fumbling noises at the other end, and some bumping, and Maria saying "Oi! That's my phone!" and what sounded like possibly the phone being dropped, and then a male voice that she'd never heard in her entire life said, "You have superpowers now? When did you get those?" Sarah Jane laughed some more. She didn't have to recognize the voice to know who it was. "I've always had them," she said. "I have hidden depths." "You never mentioned!" "You never asked!" "Well, it's not really something that one thinks to ask one's best mate, generally speaking, is it? Usually one's best mate would mention." "Well, perhaps I did and you just weren't paying attention." She didn't even know what he looked like now, but she could still almost picture his face while he considered that. "Yeah, I suppose that's possible," he said finally. "Sorry about that." Sarah Jane took pity. "You ridiculous man," she said, laughing again. "I don't have superpowers and you know it." "Oh, I think you do," he said. "I mean, look at Maria! She's brilliant! That's down to you and your superpowers, that is." "No, that's down to Maria," said Sarah Jane. "Perhaps she's got superpowers." "No, not yet, I don't think," he said. "We'll have to work on that." Oh, dear. That didn't bode well, either. "Just so long as she gets back in time for the new semester," Sarah said. "I'm not having her ruining her future for a quick lark about all of time and space!" "Oh, come on, don't you trust me?" he asked. "She'll back in time for tea!" Sarah laughed again, loudly, and kept laughing all the way through some more fumbling noises and muffled "well, if that's the way you're going to be about it"s and "thinks I can't steer, I'll show her"s and a few other random mutterings that she couldn't quite catch, plus the phone being dropped again, right through until Maria got back on the line. "What's got him so annoyed?" Maria asked. "Oh, nothing important," said Sarah Jane. "Just make sure you make him teach you how to fly that thing, all right?" "Already working on it," Maria said, smile evident in her voice. "That's my girl." She had a bright future ahead of her, Maria did. Sarah Jane just knew it. "And be back in time for the new semester! Who knows what Torchwood will manage to get up to without you around, half the continent will be gone by the time you get back." "We'll put it back to rights again," Maria assured her. "We always do." Yep, that's my girl, thought Sarah Jane. "You have fun, now." "I will!" "And don't forget to call your dad!" "I won't! Say hi to Luke and Clyde for me!" "I will. Keep in touch!" "Okay! Gotta go now, something purple's trying to eat the TARDIS, bye!" And then the call disconnected, and Sarah Jane laughed a bit more and went back to bed. | ||||
