Nine and Deanna Troi (Star Trek: The Next Generation) for svanderslice.

The Enterprise away team found something most peculiar on an old, old planet whose inhabitants had long since died off or left: a humanoid male, apparently in a coma, and a blue box. Both were brought on board, though the box had to be transported via shuttlecraft; the transporter beam couldn't lock onto it.

Captain Picard, Riker, Worf, Troi and Data gathered in Sickbay around the comatose humanoid. His face, in rest, was handsome in a severe way--strong bones, a nose like Captain Picard's, and a contrastingly soft mouth--and he certainly seemed human enough to look at. Dr. Crusher's readings told a different story.

"He has the most fascinating physiology," she said. "Almost all his systems have built-in redundancies--two hearts, two stomachs, chambered lungs--and his DNA has a triple-helix structure. The best way I can put it is to say that he appears to be a more evolved human. When we first found him, he was giving off a strong energy field, though that seems to have faded. Also--and this might not be relevant, but it was odd--he was wearing clothes that looked like they belonged in the Edwardian Era on Earth, but they didn't fit him. In fact, the seams had burst in several places, as if he had suddenly outgrown them."

"Is there any record of a being like him in the computer?" asked the captain.

Crusher shook her head. "The closest the computer could come to identifying him was to say he fits the description of a Gallifreyan."

"Gallifreyan?" Riker asked incredulously. "Like the Time Lords? The computer thinks he's a myth?"

"The Time Lord mythology appears on 32.4% of surveyed inhabited worlds," said Data. "It seems likely it has some basis in fact. There is speculation that the Guardian of Forever was created by the race that gave rise to the legends of the Time Lords."

Picard touched his communicator. "Commander La Forge, what have you discovered about the box?"

"Not a whole lot, Captain," came Geordi's reply. "The exterior appears to be wood and even reads as wood on all our instruments, but it doesn't behave like it. Nothing we have has penetrated it so far."

"Intriguing." Picard looked over at Troi. "Do you sense anything, Counselor?"

Deanna walked over to the bed. "There is a background sense of great power in his mind, though it's quiescent right now. It's almost certain he's a telepath. I--" She stopped suddenly, and a moment later, the man began to stir. "I think he . . ." She trailed off as if speech had suddenly become too much effort.

His eyes opened and met Troi's, and she gave a cry of pure despair before collapsing into unconsciousness.
