Ten and Hiro, Take II as requested by pescivendolo.

"Time to stop, Hiro."

Hiro started, looking up from his table. The voice was gentle and precise, speaking perfect Japanese, and came from a tall, slim man in a pinstriped suit who'd approached while Hiro was deep in thought.

"Why do you say that?" Hiro asked. "I can save her. I can't give up now."

The man sighed and sat down across from Hiro. His face was young, but there was something almost ancient about his eyes. He looked tired. Tired and grieved, though there was sympathy in those ancient eyes.

"You can't," said the man. "The event is established. The best you can hope for is more frustration. The worst . . ." The man raised his eyebrows. "I'm sure you can imagine it, given your entertainment choices."

The word paradox had occurred to Hiro more than once. "How do you know this?"

"Because I know time. I protect it." The man's eyes were dark and very serious. "I'm the Doctor. And while I have sympathy for you, Hiro Nakamura, if you cannot be trusted with your power, I will stop you."

Hiro couldn't doubt the Doctor's word. Somehow, he knew this man wasn't human. On some level, he'd almost expected this. Granted, his expectations had been more along the lines of Starfleet's Department of Temporal Investigations . . .

"Is there no way I can save Charlie?" he asked, eyes pleading.

Grief flared anew in the Doctor's eyes. "Everything ends, Hiro. Everything has its time, and everything dies." He swallowed visibly. "I'm truly sorry. All I can do is to advise you to cherish the time you have with her. Let her go without regrets." His eyes flicked over Hiro's shoulder. "Here she comes."

Hiro turned to look, and for a moment, he just watched Charlie as she stopped by the counter, handing someone's payment to the cashier.

When he turned back around, the Doctor was gone.
