It raises an interesting question in the way the Doctor is going. Then again, how do we know that the family that he saved didn't go and do some amazing things and he HAD to save them!?
Author's Response: Well, exactly, we don't. It's definitely a different perspective on that moral question, isn't it? Thank you :) |

It's such an interesting moral question. Where does it stop? Going around and saving people that should have died...look at Charley Pollard - the Doctor saving her nearly destroyed the Universe! But more than that, it'd mean the Doctor shaping the world in his own image. And the bitterness of saving everyone but his own people. Nice little piece, charged with emotion and question.
Author's Response: You know, the way I think of it is that in Father's Day he knew that Pete had to die; Pete was already dead. It was a fact, history. In this episode, all he knew was what we all know from history: approximately 20,000 people died in Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted. I don't think names were recorded (though the Roman Empire was very much ahead of its times in carrying out censuses - censii? - of population, I'm not sure if names were actually recorded). So it's entirely possible that he didn't know for a fact that Caecilius and the family died; so that made it safe for him to save them. Plus there's all the handwaving of him being able to see multiple timelines, outcomes and so on... but, yes, that's exactly what I was getting at here. Who gives him, or anyone, the right to make that choice? Thank you! |

Kind of reminds me of Dalek, actually:
It couldn't kill Van Statten - it couldn't kill me - it's changing. What about you, Doctor? What the hell are you changing into?
Great work! I can't wait to see the episode! (Still downloading, eek!)
Author's Response: Thank you! I hope you liked the episode - IMO, it's one of the very best since S1. |
